Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

Damn, didnt think anyone would check this post out. I managed to convince the guy to take out the switch since i'm the only customer in the building and ofcourse now my latency between pc > gateway (angel ssu 4000) and that the name of the antenna if you good folks want to google it. Is 1ms stable like it should be. That does reduce the overall latency when you're streaming audio/video online. A simple traceroute command on linux or tracert on windows can reveal how the packet slows down as it goes into more and more routers so the less latency between u and your gateway antenna the better. As for STP which is shielded twisted pair its only a type of cabling that's not effected by emi which is electro magnetic interference which only means that its protected from other electronic devices interference and no it has nothing to do with lightning bolts it will not protect against that, if a lightning bolt hits your antenna and goes down that wire the best you can do is pray. It would be a good idea to invest in "man3e zawa3q". So far as for service i think terranet is fairly good but come to think about it i havent checked out the other two competitors. If terranet took its connection from a different company than newskies i'm sure the round-trip time would be much faster hence streaming audio/video or playing online games would be faster but then again that's what u get with satellites they're slow so the only solution for ISPs in lebanon for serious highspeed/low latency is fiber optics lets hope that comes true.

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

well rolf :Internet in lebanon is heavily taxed, and there is not much competition, so you wont get anything good.
In the US they started commercialising a cellular system that lets you browse the net on your cell at 192kbit/s (i think). Of course it's cheaper than our 128k.
Soon they'll have broadband on handheld devices in the outsite, on laptops, ipods, cells, pda's... I wonder were we'll in lebanon then.

I checked satellite prices, they're still quite expensive. But if you dont download much, you can have a cheap satellite connexion with a limited transfer quota, if speed, not volume is what matters to you.

By the way tell me how is the quality of cyberia? How fast on kazaa?

i just wanna say on kazaa it sux 4kb/s   and sometimes it doesent even connect just says looking for more sources

well i just wanted to point out that here in lebanon all that is possible since there are many access points all over beirut, APs use a wireless technology known as IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g there's also an A and i think an E but point is the most common around the world and lebanon are B/G 11/54 Mbps but ofcourse thats not the connection u get from the internet thats just what they are possible of doing just like a 10baset can do 10mbps anyways, you can get your pda, laptop, cell to work on it if you they are wifi ready which is the common name for that technology.. an enhanced version of this technology already came out as well but its still premature its known as wiMAX capable of doing higher speeds and over much larger areas (50miles i believe) might be more.. also another thing to point out, many of these access points in lebanon are not secure which means anyone can tap in and use their internet for free(if they are linked to an isp)

As for kazaa i really dont know why you folks bother with that crap, that's been long dead, there's a thing called torrents it uses less sources which is what a 20-session limitation user just needs, they are much faster and no sitting on queue's but u do have to upload so you dont mess up your upload:download ratio. Check out bitspirit or azureus i recommend em both for windows or azureus for linux its great. remember google is your friend

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

hi
i have some problem ive been trying to get fast internet but cant find so the lest company i got was gds and they give me account on cyberia i got 128k cable 50$/month

i thought i would go at 60-70 kb/s but its like 10-15kb/s and kazaa is even slower

wtf is this  is this speed normall cuz i was in dubia first and dsl is cheaper and goes from 60-80kb/s

This is definatly a late reply but just wanted to explain something:

lets call this computer-basics 101 shall we ;)

1 Byte which is written with an upper case B equals 8 bits which is written with a lower case b

that said, it means the following:
when a company says they will give you 128 kbps  notice lower case b and thats the convention we use for bandwidth we measure it with bits and not bytes..

so what does 128 kbps mean in download speed (as the speed your internet explorer would show which is measured in bytes and not bits) well you'd have to divide the 128 by 8 to find the answer to that
so basic math :
128kbps/8 = 16kBps so that's the most you'd expect from that connection
256kbps/8 = 32kBps so that's the most you'd expect from that connection
512kbps/8 = 64kBps so that's the most you'd expect from that connection
real life results do vary but by using this technique you'll get an idea of what speed in terms of bytes you should expect..

Good Job!I was gonna explain the same point !
