Re: Feedback for VISP

Hello everyone. I am quite happy to find such a great forum. I will briefly introduce myself as it is my first post. I am a 24 old lebanese computer and communication engineer ( call me geek if you want ) and I work for Nokia networks MEA and Europe.

Ive been with VISP since 2005. I must admit they were the best internet service provider for the last few years until their service has been on a downhill slope since months.

Today, the service is temporary back but I would like to share my experience/problem with you guys.

aturday April 4 2009, VISP encountered an outage in their internet service that lasted for 3 complete days. They were not able to answer questions just promising that will fix the problems and finish the hassle as fast as they can.

We are sorry

We are sorry to not post any news, but we are working hard to restore fully operational internet connection. After this hassle finish, we will let you know all details and etc...

-------------------------------------------------------

Now that they have announced that systems were restored and they are almost done, I noticed that the ping reply that used to be 150-250ms maximum and 80-90ms at night is now 500-900ms !? what happened to the best ISP in Lebanon ? What is going on ?!

Now out of curiosity, I performed some traceroute commands and surprisingly I get this :

Tracing route to www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com [87.248.113.14]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 4 ms 16 ms 172.16.*.1

Are we, VISP customers passing through 2 ISPs before reaching the target website ?

I used to have a 2mbps with 1GB quota each day for like 60,000LL .. All accounts in beirut were set to 2048000 down/256000 up ( customer.visp.net.lb ) .. now they can barely provide us with a 256kbps ( double speed after 1:00 AM ? ) for the same amount of money.

I called VISP today and they said.. We are done upgrading the system.. ( duhh? ) and the ping response seems to be like :

Pinging Google [74.125.43.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 74.125.43.99: bytes=32 time=573ms TTL=237

Funny isnt it ? from 180ms ( 90ms at nights ) to 600ms..

Just out of the blue , I found this interesting pdf :

http://www.tra.gov.lb/Library/Files/Upl … 08_ISP.pdf

2008 ---> hmmm  coincidence !? A year is over and their license expired ?!

I hope we will not be forced to switch to DSL. I will give it a month or so.. If VISP comes back its great, if not, I will feel really sorry and have no choice but switching to DSL.

Regards,

Kareem.

Lebscream, the reason why ppl dont answer you is because you go through resellers. (i dont think anyone hates you, it just becomes frustrating to answer the same question again)
You see the poster above, he has a direct connection, and he said it is very good, until 4 april...
He gave very good ping numbers... so that kind of proves what we were all saying... if you have a direct connection, and it is still not good, then come back and complain.
If you have one that goes through the reseller, then most probably its the reseller who is to blame for the bad performance.

Re: Feedback for VISP

It is NOT restored. It is "emergency backup" system and there is no QoS at all. Each day i am doing improvements on system, but most important is hold because of (.... put any swearing word...) politics.

P.S. Customer support not fully aware about updates, cause i'm too busy changing configurations and to inform them about things.

Btw just need help. Open pls on ANY ips www.speedtest.net . Which "start test to recommended server" it shows for you?

Anybody from other ISP? I guess it is Haifa, cause geographically it is closest to Lebanon.

Re: Feedback for VISP

Nuclearcat : thanks for your efforts.

Just two quick questions : Will we (online gamers and downloaders) be able to resume our activities during the next couple of months ?

Customer service say "boukra mafrood yemche el 7al", and I'm not blaming them, allah yse3edon 3a hunderds of angry costumer calls.

I'm asking you since you appear to be informed about this issue :

Will VISP regain its latencies/capabilities that were before this goddamned weekend ?

If yes, when (approximatively) ?

I was expecting things to come for gamers today... but for no sign of that. Worst case end of week, if not, at friday i will do WOW and few other things my own way. Not sure but it will work.

Downloaders can download, there is no problem with downlink bandwidth.

Re: Feedback for VISP

nuclearcat, I filed this ticket http://support.visp.net.lb/index.php?_m … cketid=477
about a game eternal-lands.com which uses port 2000. it was working really well last week but today, it's getting 14 second lags. that's 14000ms pings.

Re: Feedback for VISP

it's much better. ranges 900ms between 2300ms. it's still slower than last week but definitively a huge improvement since three hours ago. :) It feels a lot more responsive now than three hours ago.

Re: Feedback for VISP

I dont konw if haifa is the best test server. There is no direct connection to israel. Try cyprus, europe, saudi arabia if available.
Besides, I have heard at the place that i worked that everyone was doing speed tests to haifa, and they actually receved a call from the governement security.
Totally untterly retarded.
As if I would open a direct connection to israel if i was a spy.

I cannot download. I have a rapidshare account and cannot do download from it (using flashget).  Same goes for all other sites. As for download through right click + save as its very unreliable and unfeasible. Will d/l software issue be fixed ?

No youtube either.

Other VISP services I use (Yes, I do other things than play online games  ):

svn - only slightly slower than last week so no big deal.
cvs - completely dead.
git -  slower than usual but still very usable.
