Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

FTTX to be distributed by three companies: Ogero head

BEIRUT: Three companies have been awarded tenders to distribute fiber optics from central stations to end users throughout Lebanon, Ogero head Imad Kreidieh announced Tuesday.
Speaking from the Grand Serail, Kreidieh said that three companies out of four bidders won: SERTA Channels-Huawei, BMB-Calix, and Powertech-Nokia.
In announcing the winners, the Ogero Director-General said that the Lebanese companies - SERTA Channels, BMB, and Powertech - would work with the foreign companies - Chinese Huawei, American Calix, and Finnish Nokia respectively - to carry out the project.
“Five companies ordered a book of terms and four companies submitted a bid,” Kreidieh said, adding that one of the four companies did not meet all the requirements to bid.
While fiber optic cables have already been distributed throughout the country to most central stations, the main issue of providing service from the central station to the end user remains. “FTTX is fiber optics from central stations to ‘active cabinets’ in different areas and into homes, schools, work places, etc.,” Kreidieh said.
He said that over the next four years, the project is expected to produce $1 billion in income for the government.
Prime Minister Saad Hariri in a speech described the project as one of the government’s most important achievements to date. “We, as a government, decided to carry out special achievements,” Hariri said at the news conference.
“We are very late in entering the FTTX phase, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do this. This is very important for Lebanon,” he said.
Hariri admitted that the project took some time to advance, “but we decided to go forward and not listen to those who want to hamper the work of the government.”
“There is a citizen who has needs. It is my job to fulfill these needs for them, period.”

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

So what happened to GDS? And what about fiber services that were already advertised in pilot areas?

In Hamra, GDS passed by homes to advertise. When I go a call back, the Cyberia sales rep said they would install within 5 days after I signed the contract.
I opted to wait because of all the legalities hovering around GDS. That was before the last decision to halt their work.

Something is going on behind the scenes. They're stalling for something. I signed my fiber application from in November, live in the middle of Hamra. I don't know what's going on.

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

My internet connection keeps fluctuating. I get a different download rate at different times. I have 100GB open speed plan with sodetel. I do not have unlimited night plan so FUP is not the cause. Can someone please help me isolate the problem? I would like to know if the cause is from ogero or sodetel or from my side.
I know that the maximum speed my line can handle is at least 2Mbps which allows me to download around 750 MB every hour but I am not always reaching this rate. I have provided the hourly downloads in MB over certain time intervals. I was downloading a game on the ps4 at all these times so the environment is not changing. I expect to get around 750MB per hour if everything was working fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

FTTC / FTTH deployment shall start in May as per Mr. Kreidieh's last video posted on Ogero's Facebook.
Phase 1 will cover these areas: https://www.ogero.gov.lb/deployment
PS: he also said by hybrid they mean a mix of FTTH and FTTC within the same area.

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

Hi guys,

I'm selling my house in Mtayleb and moving somewhere else. I am thinking of Elissar or Mazrat Yachouh.

So, I'm here to ask if anyone living in these mentioned areas can tell me if they have good internet (SNR, attenuation, errors, max attainable speed, close to or far from the central office etc...) The more info you can give, the better.

I'll post back here if I need to ask about other areas as well. Thanks in advance.

I'll send you all the info once I'm home, but I live in Elissar and I get 14 Mbps. The internet never goes down and is always reliable. Ogero is my provider.

Been having issues with other sites myself--used a proxy and it worked, so probably some dns issues with ogero.

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

@semaan,

It all depends on how far you are from the CO you are connected to.
Your stats (except the Maximum Bandwidth) aren't that bad. Do you get lots of errors ?

The thing is, despite the acceptable stats I posted about my connection, I am getting random bursts of thousands of errors per second leading to being disconnected (modem 4th and 5th led go off).

Re: Internet in Lebanon - General Questions

Is there any way of getting 3G-like latency on a DSL connection?
It seems that mobile broadband has better performance for small packets (ssh, loading pages...) but IDK it's expensive for watching movies.
