From Java to MATLAB

after finishing my last semester at university i can say that i know java. But the thing is that in my major i'll need MATLAB for both my courses and my research, and I've tried to apply my previous knowledge to MATLAB and i found that the syntax is very different and the functions are much more diverse, I've encountered so far some video and image processing functions. so my question is: does anyone knows a way to get familiar with the syntax in MATLAB, and is there a general database for functions that i can use?
and if you have any thing that can help in a transition from java to any other language, i would appreciate it( i'm interested in programming ,and  learning more languages would be a plus on my CV).
PS: when i learned java i made use of "practice it" from Washington university  so if there is anything similar for other languages that would be great too.
thank you.
