512k Broadband from terranet

Hi guys, I just had my 512k installed today. The cost is ridiculious and the service isnt that great. Anyway, I got a question. The technician who installed the unit on my roof used UTP CAT 5e cabling from the switch down to my apartment, about 4 floors down. However he did use STP CAT5e from switch to the SSU4000 which is the antenna unit. Anyway I argued that UTP is really bad to be run outside, its mainly used inside where u have no wires what so ever. Since UTP is affected by EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) anyway I was just shocked to see that some people still use UTP and it pissed me off. The guy was no network expert, he was an electrician. Anyway now that everything is setup properly. I try pinging the antenna on the roof with my pc and the round trip from my pc to that unit is jumpy, it goes from 1 all the way to 25ms. Now ive majored in networking administration and I got a feeling the utp is causing problems because there's no way a ping from a unit thats a mere 50 meters up is going to cause lag!! I get reponse times up to 25ms from the antenna on the roof, I believe thats ridiculious it should either be 1ms stable or 10ms stable. Thank you for reading this lengthy post and i'd love to hear your educated opinion.

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

I somehow got him to put the receiver and the switch in my appartment and use STP from the roof to my appartment (3 storeys down) :)
He wasn't very happy about what he was doing, said that the STP was expensive.
I wonder if 12 meters between the antenna and the receiver box (the small black box) is good.
Anyway it wouldn't make any difference with their crappy so called broadband. Heck in egypt they have better ADSL for half the price. I wrote a post on my connection here:

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

When I ping the "gateway" (ip of the ethernet interface minus 1), i get an almost constant 0.930 lag sometimes 1.1 ms. I'm assuming the gateway is the antenna.
When I ping one of the terranet routers (212.98.136.33), I get
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 32.383/45.653/87.106/11.124 ms
that's a ping of around 40ms

Now the recever unit (the small black box) is directly plugged into the computer, no switch between them. I understand you have a switch in your setup. If there are other computers on the switch, and they are infected by some virus that causes massive ping scans, it can slow down the swithch.

By the way I have no computer science major, but would like to work in the field of internet and networking. Any tips? I'll complete a business computing major soon.
What about CCNA?
Where can I find jobs?

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

I have an UDP cable running from the basement to the 2nd floor. that's about 12 meters.
At first, I had wired it incorrectly and it did barely worked. When I rewired it linke this:
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, looking at the plug from the side of the connectors:
white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown

Now it works fine at 100mb/s
If you're having problems, try swithching to 10mb/s mode, it's much more reliable.

By the way, you might want to put lightning protection on this cable, it may grill your PC.

Thats a pretty good connection , how much does it cost u and is it dedicated 512k or shared? And do they limit you to a given bandwidth?

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

Hi dude.
No, transfer quota is not limited. Ya3ne you can download as much as you want.
It's shared, and pretty crowded, ya3neh you rarely get the maximum (55KB/s)  But you get minimum 35KB most of the time.
The simutaneous connections are limited to a maximum of approx 23  TCP connections, ya3ne you'd better use it only on one computer, and if you use file sharing you have to be careful not to download too many files at once, or else connextions will start to be refused.
I am deceived because I never got more than 8-9 KB download on kazaa, and the upload is not faster than a modem. but the rest is pretty cool.
Try to see someone with a idm connection before deciding. I have a feeling that IDM have a better quality (just a feeling....).

I wrote about this connection in this post too:

yeah happened to me too, struck 2 PCs at once: the 1st pc (a special small barebone PC) was completely grilled like you said, and the reseller talked his way out of applying the 1 year warranty
So, DO NOT GO TO TELETRADE - he wont replace your PC if it fails.
The 2nd PC is a reagular computer with an MSI board, only the onboard LAN was damaged. The rest of the PC was ok, I just had to plug in a new 10$ network adapter. But maybe that's because PC n.1 took all the shock.

I didn't know SDP (you mean STP?) offers protection.

Anyway I got  special lighning protection equipment. It's a tiny plastic box that you put between your network cable and PC (or switch) and it will stop the current from passing if the cable is struck by lightning. It costs 15$ I think.

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

when they say 128kb it means kilobits and not kilobytes...
so when you get a 128kilobits, divide it by 8 and you get the bandwidth in kilobytes...

2 month ago i installed ADSL2, its a 20meg connection, almost 1,2 meg transfer for 30 euros...i also have freephone and 80 TV channels for free and all for 30 euros....

Internet in lebanon is heavily taxed, and there is not much competition, so you wont get anything good.
In the US they started commercialising a cellular system that lets you browse the net on your cell at 192kbit/s (i think). Of course it's cheaper than our 128k.
Soon they'll have broadband on handheld devices in the outsite, on laptops, ipods, cells, pda's... I wonder were we'll in lebanon then.

I checked satellite prices, they're still quite expensive. But if you dont download much, you can have a cheap satellite connexion with a limited transfer quota, if speed, not volume is what matters to you.

By the way tell me how is the quality of cyberia? How fast on kazaa?

Well actually, their is no infrastructure to support ADSL in leb. This is why it cost so much over their...the companies have to install everything. Other then them being rip offs, they still have to put the infrastructure for it

You guys want really fast internet? Apply for a legal Showtime subscription. I'm telling you, it's awesome. You get internet for free once subscribed, but if you want something as fast as 512, you'll need to pay up just a bit more. Bottom line, legal Showtime + 512 internet would still cost way less than what you're paying right now. Oh, and there are NO installation fees. Peace out!

That showtime service exists here in KSA, but you have to pay installation + monthly service fee (ie not free with the service) but I got to say one thing satellite connection still requires a phone, becuase you download from the showtime and upload through your phone.

At least this is true here, quote me if i am wrong or it is different in leb.

Re: 512k Broadband from terranet

I did not find anything on showtimearabia.com
You can find cheap satellite internet with a lot of companies. I used to pay 15$ per month for 750 kbits one way satellite internet. It was darn fast, but as almost always with satellite internet, there's a catch: you can only download 1GB per month.
At this speed the gigabyte did not last more than 4-5 days. I was so happy downloading TV series on kazaa.
