Jobless ? Gather here

No surprise. Many lebanese people are struggling with the current downhill situation.

This thread might help someone in someway so please answer the below questions.

Are you jobless ?
What went wrong ?
How did you lose your job ?
Whats your field of work ?
How many vacancies did you apply so far ?
How many interviews did you achieve ?
Did you find a new work ? How long was the jobless period ?
Whats your next move ?

Re: Jobless ? Gather here

I think worth to cover more broad subject, it is not only about jobless, but also people who have salary decimated by ~4 till now. So if someone was barely earning for living, might still have job, but it is almost useless, might not even cover commute costs (except fuel there is car depreciation/maintenance fees).

I second nuclearcat's sentiments. It may be easier to be jobless now and have time to look than have a job where you get paid almost nothing while working very long hours and not sparing time to look elsewhere.

The thing is that there are jobs and very well paying ones if you can catch them. Last month, some guy in our neighborhood landed a job for 2 million LL in a computer store and the vacancy was only open for 3 hours. Another guy landed a job for 2.75 million at a home appliances store. Again the vacancy was open for a few hours only. You need immense public relations and time and I mean a lot of time.

I did over 100 interviews last summer before landing (or you can easily say settling for) my current job in December. Commuting between two to three interviews a day was exhausting. The nice thing is that Lebanon seems smaller to me now. The distance between sabtieh
and dekwane to burj hammood and to achrafieh feels much smaller now. Even achrafieh feels like it is in the same neighborhood and musaitbeh or mar elias. Lebanon is way too small.

Interviews are hard work. Many interviewers want an overly aggressive person while others want a very calm person who listens to them brag about their company. It's a gamble which persona you try during an interview.
And in over a 100 interviews, only two interviewers asked to see my university diploma. I could have pretended I was both a medical doctor and nuclear physicist at once (I am neither) with the remaining ones and they wouldn't have known.

Age matters too. I have a close friend who is 44 with 15 years experience as a senior accountant at an international company. He's been jobless since late 2018 and every time he applies somewhere, all they can see is his silver hair and it scares them.

Regarding getting interviews, my experience was very skewed because I was applying to 20+ unique job ads a day. A 100+ interviews in four months was not respectively much.

As to why I lost the previous job, it was due to bad management. They did very bad business mistakes and disregarded our advice (the employees advice).

100%
Never did job interview in my life, but on experience of many friends - lot of HR and interviewees time can be saved by proper procedures and preliminary remote testing, and it will increase transparency.

Re: Jobless ? Gather here

Yea I'm jobless now since the start of the October revolution. I don't really care at this point, I probably can count the amount of jobs I applied to since then on my fingers. My previous experience was in Finance/Accounting (nothing really fancy nor that I have a unique experience) and the one before that in computer retail and some repairs (it's a hobby). Before that? I was jobless too, so I'm back to point zero (I graduated a little bit late from university for personal reasons).

What went wrong? My last work experience had maybe the gold olympic medal for worst management in history of management, I literally cannot describe what was happening there it's a true miracle how can such degenerates of human beings have so much money and run a 200+ worker factory with 0 IQ points.

At this point now, why would I even bother? College almost costed me around 40.000$ from the hard work of my father and we weren't really considered "rich people" at all. Now the highest pay I can dream of is what ? 100$ a month ? No thanks not really worth waking up for. Even worse that I live in Bekaa, not really many jobs you can find around here especially now. Go down to Beirut you say? Good luck not paying 80% of your salary for a landlord to rent yourself a bed to sleep. This country is a literal dumpster, been saying that for the entirety of my life and people blaming me for being "anti-lebanese". Now after they lost their beloved dollars (which is all they care about) they agree with me.

So what's my next move? I got some money saved up which is getting me by for the things I need. Eventually when that runs out I'm probably fleeing the country illegally (no way in hell I'm wasting the other half of my life working for absolutely nothing just because some old fat idiots are glued to their chairs and pretend they are immortal gods). If that option fails somehow, I'll probably end up hanging myself from a tree. Still a far better option from having my month's salary and hard work worth a couple of packs of cigarettes.

And no, I'm not depressed I'm realistic. I'm way more cheerful in person than I sound right now. It's the sad truth of our existence these days. Sorry for the post but I had to rant and vent somewhere.

Re: Jobless ? Gather here

The thing is that something indeed needs to be done. Otherwise, there will be mass poverty and unemployment. The problem is that people do not understand that their explanations to what is happening is not always accurate and they often relay mass observations instead of their own experiences.

On top of that, people are and have always been spoiled brats. They need someone to rule them with an iron fist and when no one is there to control them, they roam free and cause inflation without repercussions. People are horrible. They need to be smacked once in a while.

I can probably start leaving work earlier but I stay till evening because free coffee saves on expenses...
The office connection is very fast too.
Getting paid in LBP is basically working for free.

Re: Jobless ? Gather here

For the unemployed people, I suggest you guys start self working online. With all the crap going in Lebanon, internet can be your salvation.  I know many people that make $100~$500 a month from youtube/adsense or social media. You can make much more if you're putting more than 6 hours a day.

I say go for it, you're sitting home anyway and there are no job opportunities. Even if you're not a computer savvy, you will become one, learn new things. You don't have to write a website from scratch or learn programming, but you can do something like a youtube channel, instagram account, blog about something, sell photographs, work on upwork or a similar website, create an affiliate website or drop-shipping, a porn website if you have to.

Making around $200 a month is not a hard task really, it might be the first 5~6 months, but then it will get easier plus you will get the experience.

On websites like upwork, it was hard to compete with Indians since their hourly rate is always less than $10 per hour, but seeing that couple hundred of $$$ per month are enough to live in Lebanon right now, you can definitely do it.

Plus Lebanese people are well educated, they speak 2~3 languages, so that will give you an advantage over people from other countries like India and Philippines.

There's a lot of info on how to drive traffic to your insta/website etc... some are legit some aren't, you can read real life journeys on sites like blackhatworld, assess the positives and come up with your own strategy.

I made from upwork like $700 in the first 5 months, and I was working like 2 hours a day at most on there.

My suggestion is, don't think about a job in Lebanon, there are none and won't be for years to come. Think about the internet, the internet is still growing and the internet is in USD and USD is like gold in Lebanon right now. And most importantly don't waste your life waiting for a crappy job and don't waste your time sleeping or watching series.

I was lucky enough to leave the country several months ago, however, if i was still in Lebanon unemployed, that's what I would have done. there's no way on Earth that I would sit home just hating everything, giving up, watching myself age and regretting it. I wouldn't say I'm an expert in any of these stuff I mentioned earlier, but at some point I was making $100 from adsense per month on auto pilot websites, and some other times I was making couple of hundreds from other things. You have to spend time reading so many journeys on blackhatworld or similar websites, there are so many ideas and so many things to do, I always had a job so never really had 8 hours a day to put in any of these stuff, but they do work, maybe not the first few times but eventually they do. You just have to read so many articles and so many journeys and make your own niche and go for it. The only disadvantage would be withdrawing the money, you end up losing a small amount due to bank fees, but still better than nothing.

You have the time, don't use it on movies, games and sleep.  Work online, fail, rise again, fail again and keep rising.

If one day you apply for immigration these will not be in vain same thing about your brain-dead previous job, it will count as experience.

Re: Jobless ? Gather here

You will most probably never be asked for your diploma in an interview. You write it on your CV. and yes we look at it, and yes it does account to something. It's not the fill picture, but it's does say something.
As to pretending to be a doctor of nuclear scientist, if you manage to fool the interviewers in all the rounds, then maybe you are good at it. Interviews are meant to judge your character, capabilities and how you fit the team that you will join. At least that's what do / check when i interview people.
The diploma did NOT go to waste. Uni isn't mean to teach you everything, heck, it barely teaches you the basics. But Unis are meant to teach you the way to think, behave and interact. and that is priceless.

I Understand things are tough in this country. But if any developers are looking for a job, send me a PM and maybe we can work something out.

100% ! I am actually very bad with job interviews. However I have applied to one job where they asked me to do a 3 hour (!) test on my computer. After the test there was a 5 minute interview in person then they actually chased me to send me a (very good) offer, with relocation package.

I just wish all interviews could start with a straight-forward technical test and be based on that, it is much more time efficient.

I'm not particularly good, I am not even up-to-date anymore, but any time there is a competition or test I do very well. I even won a competition like this once with a free plane ticket and accommodation for an event. But then in person I don't seem to give off a good impression, and I cannot compete with people who show up with fancy degrees and fancy names on their CVs.

As I said, it's a gamble. If you play the persona they happen to want, the interview works. I've done hundreds of interviews.
They judge you within one look. They feel their "vast" experience in life allows them to do so. It's not always accurate though.
I did an excellent interview last week. The guy even said "عظيم. يعني فيك تفجر  طاقتك عنا"
He agreed to 2 millions a month which is 2.5 times what I earn now. Sadly, they never called back. I guess someone offered to work for less.
