  • CryENGINE 3 Released for free

Crytek has released the free version of their CryENGINE 3 SDK.
You can now create your own games with the same engine that created Crysis 2! It is free to use, without charge for non-commercial game development. If you want to charge for your game Crytek has a royalty-only license model for games made with this SDK, where Crytek require only 20% of the developer’s revenues from the commercial launch of their game.

Ohh god. this thing is the most complicated software i've ever seen.

Edit:
Shit, you drag and drop a helicopter, you release it, it'll fall and crash into pieces. You can drive it as well.
whoa, whats the graphics like? like crysis 2? or you have to make the graphics look good by yourself? including textures?
So we tested it at the company here (George included ;) ):
- I saw cryEngine 2 years ago in Dubai Game Summit, and thought it was amazing.
- To clarify things, the license is > 600k USD.
- The free one is 600MB comes with some models some textures some entities and 1 demo level.
- the features are limited (lots of buttons are disabled).
- in only has DX9 renderer.

In all it is a very nice product.
But this is a game engine/editor, this means you need a lot of developers, artists and animators to produce something decent.
i dont have time to test any engine lately, how does it compare against UDK / Unity ?
in terms of speed / shader complexity / lights / shadow etc etc
So is it the same as using the Cryengine sandbox 1&2 (Farcry and crysis era) ? I have built maps using these two editors in the past, or the UI has completely changed ?

It's actually the CryEngine 3 SDK - that's different from the map editor (sandbox). You can create a whole new product out of the CryEngine 3 SDK. Of course if you have the required programming skills. Btw, sandbox 3 released few months ago - it looks pretty similar to previous one.

Looking at the pics from the download page the interface looks the same as Sandbox 1,2 and 3 but of-course many extra features.
