Hey my cousin's interested in building a computer, he's an architect and he wants it for rendering on 3D Max and for gaming. Do you recommend place that will build, how much shld it cost?? do u have any suggestions to improve
Here are the Specs :
Intel Core i7 980 (6x 3.33 ghz) 12mb
Corsair 12gb (6x 2gb) xms3 1600mhz ----- or do u recommend anything better for rendering eg. 3x 4gb
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 OC - 2.5gb - (POV) (PCI-E)
motherboard - gigabyte ga-x58-usb3 (intel x58)
power supply 750w cool master PSU low noise
hard drive 1: ocz vertex sata-II 120gb ss hdd silent
hard drive 2: 2tb sata-II hdd udma 300 5400 32mb
optical drive: lg 10x bluray re-writer/ reader and 16x dual layer dvd/ rewriter
internal card reader

Damn that's one helluva rig there! Wouldn't you perhaps consider Nvidia Quadro series instead though? I mean for integration with 3d softwares and renderings i think quadro was made for that... correct me if im wrong though..

Yh, quadro all the way :)

Hey omar,
Well the system is good, but its a bit reckless.
First the 980x is an overpriced cpu, if you want a 6-core cpu i suggest getting an i7 970, way cheaper.
Also quadro is overpriced to the owner's usage.... Its not overpriced to companies, but overpriced to individual, + the guy said rendering and gaming, getting a quadro will hinder the 2nd (quadros are bad for gaming).
Also since you need alot of rams so dont be afraid to fill up thoe 6 slots, more ram = faster operation in cad/maya/3dmax...etc.
The gpu selected is not that much, its a reference design with double the memory. Its price is close to gtx 580. I suggest getting a normal 570 (asus dcuII card ;) ) or a gtx 580 reference.
Pm me for more details on where to get them, and if you have more questions...

Rendering uses alot of RAM. 12GB might not be enough, go for 24GB. The Quadro FX is dedicated for rendering; Geforce is dedicated for gaming, don't mixup with the uses cause you might damage the Geforce. Also don't forget about CPU cooling. CPU rendering will use 98-99% of the CPU power, so consider water cooling the PC

Well, it's not true. you WILL see the difference when working between a quadro and gaming card.
And " getting a quadro will hinder the 2nd (quadros are bad for gaming)." .... says who ? I Play games on my Quadro quite nicely. Last game i played was Assasin's Creed Brotherhood and was play Full HD with Max settings. so it's not a bad gaming card, just not the best.
But getting a gaming card will hinder your work :P
As for the rams, yh, dont be afraid to fill the slots. 12 Gb is enough. well, depending on your scenes. some of my friends render scenes that require more than 24 Gb of ram. How many polys are usually your scenes ? do you use hair/furr ? any dynamics ? lots of proxies ? If your scenes wont fit in your ram at render time, you will see a drastic increase in render time.
And you dont have to goto 1600 ..... u wont see any impact if you buy the cheaper 1066 rams, just make sure they are low lat.
As for the CPU, why not move to the 1155 and get the 2600k ? u can easily oc it to get a better performance. As long as u keep it cool, it works. If your main rendering engine is going to be this machine, then a 6-core might make a difference. I Honestly like to send my renders to my render nodes and keep my working on my machine.
Anyhow, from my friends and my personal experience, a gaming card over big max scenes = bad :)

Padre what model do you have?
Also cmon...cmon... assasins creed!!!!! like thats a demanding game :P.
We can all agree tat geforce card are strong enough to be good rendering card, without having to pay extra $.
Also about the rams i suggest getting 12g (4x3g) then you can see if you need more rams. If you fill all slots with 2gs you will not be able to upgrade no more.
Padre
Yeah, assasin'ts creed :P it's not the most demanding but still ;)
I have a quadro4800. I'm sure you mean viewport rendering :P cause CUDA rendering is still not "production" worth. only rt preview.

Cant we all agree that the fact geforce card (fermi) are good enough for all the rendering needed? And they are cheaper (alot cheaper) than quadros!!
If you have the money go with a quadro and buy yourself a good gpu (gtx 460/560 ti). But if your on a budget you can get a geforce card and get all the work done. People buy laptops with a simple gpus on them (gt330..etc) And are able to render 3d apps. And these gpus are WEAK with respect to a 570.
If all fails you can mod a geforce card to become a quadro card (quadro is still faster, but hey increase performance on the fly), its a soft mod btw...

i'm on a budget and the quadro is out of my price range. i consulted a friend of mine who renders proffesionally and suggested the quadro was ideal but expensive and suggested the graphics card gtx 580. i will definitely take the advise to reserve slots for RAM upgrades and go for a more gig. i've visited republic of gamers to day who specialise in building high spec rigs and suggested alot of what u guys said. when he gives me a quote i will upload the revised spec with price offer which i shld get 2mrw.
