I have a Toshiba A300 - 23J notebook for sale.
Specs: http://goo.gl/dwYbW
Still in good condition, some scratches here and there, barely noticeable normal wear and tear (did not show on my camera).

I am planning to buy an HP DV6-6177ee: http://goo.gl/Tc9RQ. If anyone tried it, or any of the new Pavillion DV6 series, please tell me what you think, especially concerning battery life and screen quality (resolution, viewing angles, colors...)
I followed that thread "cautiously". I don't see a better option since I can't afford a MacBook at the moment.
I own an HP Dv7, and it has a lot of wear and tear and averages at 70 degrees Celcius idle; They are horrible products that have low-quality build.

This was a survey conducted by Squaretrade, one of the biggest laptop warranty companies.
Don't: HP, Acer, Gateway
Do: ASUS, Toshiba, Sony
Keep in mind that those statistics are only for consumer laptops, not business hence the reason Lenovo is on lower side of the scale.
Stay away from HP.

Period.
I am also terribly disappointed with my G62 HP laptop. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I don't know why the Rage and Anger here, I got a Pavilion dv5(yes the one from 2008 that overheats) and the only bad thing that happened was that the battery died after 2 years of "near" constant use. For the overheating I just bought a cheap cooling pad and that did the trick!I also see lots of Lebanese with newer HPs and they don't seem to complain.

In fact, I'm still thinking about getting the new DV7(with the 1080p) soon. I've only used(or been bought) HPs since my childhood lol

You shouldn't have to buy a cooling pad to keep your laptop cool enough! That is insane!

I have my Acer for more than 6 months now and man it's good. No overheating, very good battery life, and it works as expected.

On the other hand, my cousin's HP can pretty much heat a room. All laptop have similar hardware, but HP's chassis and thermal design is apparently horrible.

The CPUs run much hotter in their laptops compared to other laptops. Are they stuffing insulating inside their laptops or what?!
Go for Acer!
Plus Acer's have a very good aftersale service

like I said, I have the dv5 2008 series(the "ultimate-heater" :P).. as I've heard from people the new series now don't overheat as much.I'll be honest, when I first got the laptop(by monthly payments for 2 years) I thought the overheating meant there was something wrong with the laptop so I asked the bank If I could replace it until I found out on forums about the "problem" being a norm lol

I think the reason for alot of HPs being used here is primarily the "price-performance(as stated)" ratio.
