Well, im building a new rig, and which operating system is the best for gaming (high end games) like crysis 1/2, and games like that?
Best Operating System for Gaming?
Well in my personal opinion go either Windows XP or Windows 7. Maybe 7 will be less problematic with compatibility and drivers now that XP is a bit old, but my gaming laptop is XP and I've never regretted it.
XP doesn't even support DX10 or DX11, Vista is a resrouce hog and an epic fail of an OS, and Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. All support OpenGL, which Linux uses natively and specifically. Go Windows 7, of course.
Windows 7 and only Windows 7
I agree windows 7 is the best, also keep in mind that windows xp doesnt support more then 3gb of ram...

Wrong...32-bit OSes don't support more than 4GB-VRAM (that's a minus sign) of your system RAM. 64-bit ones do, and that includes XP 64-bit, which wasn't a refined 64-bit OS as you would have liked it to be. It had its own share of problems.Nemesis-301 wroteI agree windows 7 is the best, also keep in mind that windows xp doesnt support more then 3gb of ram...

That's a very tough question. I haven't used windows vista or 7 but if I remember correctly, windows XP used to swap like crazy when I last ran it in 2004 with 1GB ram even when applications didn't need that much memory.
I bet something like that would affect game performance.
Linux is kinda better at that. It won't use your swap till it runs out of ram. sadly there aren't many games for Linux other than MMORPG stuff.
The game I play still uses OpenGL 1.5 for compatibility with older computers. the next version of it will be able to use OpenGL 2.0 (better graphics and apparently higher framerate).

Nobody seems to be interested in your upcoming rig. Do you mind sharing the specs of this build?
And definitly go win7 64-bit hands down.

sadly in order to run any dx10 game you need a supercomputer, as in the case of FSX and Crysis, both major fails. But I do agree that XP has its days counted and going back to it could be a problem in the mid-termyasamoka wroteXP doesn't even support DX10 or DX11, Vista is a resrouce hog and an epic fail of an OS, and Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Actually microsoft gave win xp 900 days until complete termination...
Windows XP is a legacy OS; I see it old as Windows 98. Go for Windows 7 64-bit if and only if you have more than 3GB of RAM installed, otherwise go for Windows 7 32-bit.
A supercomputer? As a matter of fact, many games run better in dx10 mode than in dx9 mode, and with better graphics too. Crysis is demanding, yes, but in both dx9 and dx10 modes. FSX is just a piece of crap. DX10 support was patched in patchily. It wasn't built for DX10.babum wrotesadly in order to run any dx10 game you need a supercomputer, as in the case of FSX and Crysis, both major fails. Both major fails? What do you mean?
XP offers no more advantages since Windows 7 was released. none. Heck I even have my netbooks running Windows 7.
Commodor 64 ((:
by major fails I mean how DX10 runs on those games, maybe they have improved but I see no true gain, it's just my opinion
Windows 7 is THE best OS for gaming because it has DX10 and DX11 support, its new and has better compatibility with games, and drivers are more stable
FORGET about XP people SERIOUSLY ...its like using windows 98 in 2006.....(it is OOOOOOOLD)
XP is still alive because some companies have software that isn't functional on windows 7
so go with windows 7 PERIOD!

Well, looking into the future, i prefer Linux, with wine emulator, i can play il2 strumovik smoothly... Crysis 2 on linux is a bit buggy...
