Arduino + Twitter + cool kid = Earthquake alarm!!

This 14-year-old kid has built an awesome earthquake detector using Arduino and then tweets about it making a very efficient alarm system for virtually zero cost.

One question: How would you do an earthquake detector? Wouldn't you need some sort of seismic wave detector? Aren't those expensive?

Has anyone ever tried anything like this?

This is very nice, the idea is very cool actually. It is about time that such alarms get broadcasted to different social media as people are spending most of their time on those websites. As for how he did it, I did a small search, I guess her could have done something like this for the sensor. I guess J4D would have a clearer explanation or idea about it.

rahmu, he's using a domestic earthquake detector which are relatively cheap (he bought it for 75$). What he did was change the internal circuit of the purchased quake detector with his own Arduino board which analyzes the signal coming from the machine. Since he has the Arduino board connected to his server, the devised system tweets it alarms instead of ringing. Needless to say, this is one ingenious hack :)

the device is already connected to a seismic wave detector through twitter...
it alerts them just a few seconds before, but the modern approach to detect earthquakes is through very accurate GPS data
