I have a serious problem !
I have internet from a local ISP. He is a VISP distributor.
The internet speed has been gradually declining since the day we registered. He claims that it's not his fault, but ours. He claims we are abusing the bandwidth. Consequently, I logged on to my VISP account were you can monitor your bandwidth usage everyday, divided over multiple sessions and hours. (which is a great thing by VISP)
HOWEVER, I was shocked by the numbers. The numbers indicated that every day I had around 300 Megabytes of download! I wish I could download 300 megabytes everyday. The numbers were outrageous ! I download only a couple of songs each day max 5-10 and everyone else simply browses the net!
After thorough investigation with all my family members, changing router passwords(incase someone hacked our routers), and decreasing my download habits, the problem persisted. the only possible choice left was windows update. I found out that on most laptops(other than mine) windows update was allowed to download whenever it wanted! (F**k microsoft for such an option)
So i changed the option to 'ask me before downloading' on all computers.
This change has decreased the numbers to around 150 megabytes per day. However some days its still illogical and rises again to around 300!!
SO, my request here is for a program someone may suggest that could allow me to monitor any downloads on all computers, and restricting them, to a point where the user has to accept the download. I want to see what programs are sucking my internet badwidth. it could be the antuviruses, programs, upddates ect..
I need help asap thanks !! :(

jadf24 FUP on VISP changed few days ago, probably it should be much better than before. Can you check now?
Did you ever visit customer.visp.net.lb ?

I had the same problem as yours Jad. Check not only the Windows Update but every other program like Real Player and the DVD Players. The thing is that we used to pay 65-78$ for a 256kbps DSL while we should be paying 25.5$ . Anyway , i noticed that when my brother's computer changed, the internet bill decreased to 25 $ even though windows updater was turned off on his previous computer.

yeah i was referring to customer.visp.net.lb !
Its getting really irritating !! Here's today's bandwidth consumption
Something is really illogical here ! I'm sure its not a client issue ! I hope VISP solves this issue.

A little advice for windows.
Hit start, run and enter msconfig.
Turn tasks and services off, those you judge maybe be consuming bandwidth or just useless.
Note: for the services, click "Hide all Windows Services" so you don't accidentally turn something important off.

I have a nice tool called networx, google it. I recommend downloading it to each and every computer in your network to check which one is consuming more bandwidth. then you can perform some sort of differential analysis with the highest consuming bandwidth PC and thus knowing the applications that are causing it. But it could also be a virus or spyware that is causing your problem, try installing a nice antivirus on all your Computers.
EDIT : now that I'm thinking about it, establishing a local proxy based on a pc placed as a server would work as you want it too, though I am not really accustomed to doing that, you might wanna ask someone in the forum or just Google it.

Try a forum search.

First of all, make sure that AUTOMATIC UPDATES are turned OFF ! They can download stuff like 3 GB!!
Second, there is a VIRUS that actually no antivirus detects, it just uses your internet connection to download things that are automatically deleted after download. Check in the Task Manager for the process "stdrt.exe". If you find it, either find a way to remove it definitely from the PC, or end it every time as soon as you connect to the internet.
Finally, if you are using Windows Vista/7 , download the Network Meter desktop gadget. It records both the current speed of upload and download, and the total amount downloaded/uploaded since you connected to the network.

Thanks a lot for the program ! I'll be monitoring with it the usage on all computers (this option is amazing!) and comparing it to the numbers given by customer.visp.net.lb
I hope there isnt any bug in their monitoring systems!
thanks for the support guys !

You are welcome man, though I did find a bit of a bug when using a vpn rather than the regular wifi card. it ends up counting your consumption twice. so my advice if you are using any vpn or any sort of software that will resemble this situation is go into options, and check the device it should monitor.

I downloaded yesterday DUmeter and Netmeter at exactly the same time!
At this moment DUmeter is telling me i downloaded 45 mb so far and net meter is saying 80!!!!!!!
Which one is more accurate?

@kfc: maybe one of them is recording the LAN traffic, re-check.

I am noticing that DUmeter is giving me very accurate info, almost the same as what the broadband connection status box says. However netmeter is giving a double number. H ow can i make sure that netmeter isn't recording LAN traffic?
By the way, Van I use DUmeter for more than the 1 month trial period. Or I have to buy it afterwards?
