iv always used the slowest ram in the first slot so that the fastest ram would run at the same speed as the slow one
but i want to know what is the rule
fastest or slowest first?
and i would like to ask this also
when removing the ram and placing it in the case or on the powersupply while the pc is on...will the ram get damaged in anyway??

Wait, did you say you removed the ram while the PC was ON ?

I'm not sure about the fastest/slowest thing you brought up as it is the first time I hear about it. If you mean two ram modules with different clock speeds (MHz) then forget about pairing them at all.

i ddnt im jst asking
and my rams are 1x2gb and 1x 4gb both kingston and both from pcandparts

Bigger ram (more GBs) does not mean it is faster. They can have the same clock speed.

Are you sure both modules are DDR-2 or DDR-3 ? If so, do you know their respective speeds?

Also it is strongly advisable not to attempt removing any PC component while the whole thing is turned on.

i think you misunderstood me
im asking if i removed one of my ram sticks and placed them inside my case or put them on my powersupply and THEN turn the PC back on with only one stick but the other stick being on a metal piece ...will it get damaged from the electricity that is conducted by the metal??
and also both my rams have the same speed and latecy its jst the GB-s (and i know GB isnt faster, i jst wrote it incorectly)

Why would you do such thing? Technically no it can't be damaged by just placing it on the PSU because there's no electricity running on its outer case, is there? But still, why do you want to do that?

If your rams have the same speeds and latency then you're fine however you want to place them.

because somtimes when im diagnosing somones pc ..i take it apart and run it barebon (without a case)
so when i remove some ram i place it on the psu cz its nearer than the table xD (im lazy :P) so the otherday my boss saw me doing it and he told me thats not good for the ram because the psu or any other metal part has some electricity on them so i jst wanted to make sure

The location of the RAM strip is not important when it comes to the speed at which it is going to run.

The BIOS checks both strips and if the speed is not the same, it sets the speed to the lowest one.

And do not place any hardware component on the PSU since there are electric and magnetic fields generator by the PSU. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Follow A+ safety standards please! I wear rubber gloves when working inside the computer case. Never leave screws/computer parts/ anything inside the computer case while the system is running. Accidents happen.

And use antistatic wrist strap and ground yourself while working or building a PC.

What they do, the motherboard makers, is ensure that the traces leading to each RAM slot are identical to the next. Hence, all RAM slots have the same trace route lengths, and all run the same speed, physics - wise. The electrons take the same time to travel and reach the memory controller. This is why, in X79 boards (yet to be released), which are quad-channel, 2 RAM slots are on each side of the processor. This is for trace lengths.
