Hey guys,

My PS3 suffered the YLOD, I'm not going to fix it,
I wanted to see if anyone was interested in buying it for parts, or even has an idea on what to do with it since I'm not going to fix it.

On the other hand, I received by the same place, an offer to buy a used PS3 Slim without any accessories (joystick, games...) for $180.

What's your input? Take the risk and buy it?
If so, is there any guidelines I should follow to check before buying it?
for the first part of your post, i suggest you find a way to use its blu ray player, or maybe even use its hard drive as an external.
as for the second part, well there's not much ways to inspect the internal state of a ps3, it all comes down to previous owner's care for the device, for example the blu ray player may be defective, lens damaged or maybe if it was dropped on the floor and was damaged, you can try out different discs to inspect the drive's functionality, play some HD content on it, test the hdd transfer speeds, ask the owner if he faced any hardware problems with it such as crashing, overheating... You could try to take it apart and check for any signs of damage but i wouldnt recommend it unless you know what you're doing.
in my humble opinion 180$ is generally a low price to ask for a ps so maybe there's something wrong with it or the owner is desperate for some cash.

If you don't buy it, i'm interested in the ps3. PM the store's number please .
Hey dude my friend's PS3 had the YLOD. So I opened it up, reapplied thermal paste, and connected everything back. Still same issue, so I think its either the power supply or the soldering points have cracked. On inspecting the motherboard, it seems nothing is wrong with the solder. So maybe its the power supply. Still haven't fully tested it. 5V is fine, but i need to short 2 pins to let it start up and give 12V. Still haven't found the wires to short. It's really easy, if your PS3 is already ruined and the warranty has expired. If you don't want to fix it, would you care to sell me your PS3 power supply (supposing that mine is ruined)? Market price is $25-30 in the USA.

By the way, my friend mentioned that the way he had his PS3 placed in his house had helped in overheating it, because there wasn't enough clearance behind it. He used to play for few hours until it started giving the YLOD and got worse and worse. Now it won't boot for even a few seconds. So basically overheating is the main cause for failure. You may want to think twice before throwing it away. Places like Nino can probably fix it if your issue is simply reapplying thermal paste and you don't want to do t yourself. An electrician can probably fix the solder issue, and you can measure the power supply's output by yourself. So think carefully.
you can trade it in for a refurbished model down at some Sony place (you have to pay forgot how much though)

ask chosen2k ... i believe he had done that.

my opinion: buy a new one.

Thanks for the reply, but I didn't get your input on posting in proper English. Where did I make a grammatical mistake that bothered you so much?

Anyway, as I already said, the price was weird to me. I found it really cheap, + it wasn't the user that was selling it, it was a store.

@yasamoka: sure dude no problem, just let me make sure I'm going to get rid of it.

@The-MMMs: thanks, I'll contact chosen2k and ask him how much he bought his for.

I think this was placed by a moderator since Assassin's original post had "u" instead of "you".
It's not targeted at you Cyril.
