Hey LG members
So I’m completly a hardware noob, I've been using laptops for years and never had the chance to upgrade a desktop by myself , so here's a try
i want to hook up 3 monitors for my old desktop ( don’t ask me why, It's Just for fun , and to play some games , and I’m not willing to pay to much to play High graphic games , any way I’ll wait your help )

here's my old desktop specs :

Processor type : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPu
E6550 @ 2.33 GHZ (2CPUs), ~2.3GHZ
Intel(R) EM64T capable

Processor Speed : 2331 MHZ
System Bus Speed : 1333Mhz
System Memory speed : 667 MHZ

Total Memory(RAM) : 2048 MB (DDR2)

System Manufacture : Intel
System Model : DG31PR

Display Device (VGA) :

Name: Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT
Manufacture : Nvidia
Chip Type : GeForce 9400 GT
Dac Type : intergrated RAM DAC
Approx Total Memory : 1778 MB

Thanks in Advance :)
Best Regards.
between , will i bee needing a Cooling System ? , which the best way to connect my 3 monitors ?
Thank You
you can't hook up 3 monitors to a 9400GT but you can hook up 2 by DVD and VGA
just put the cables
If you want to change your VGA,then make sure that it's an ATi,because their cards can handle more than 2 monitors (not all of them). :)
He meant to say DVI not DVD.

Shekval, do some research on ATI Eyefinity and then decide on which card you want based on your budget.
okay so ,after some searching i found that its impossible to have eyefinity with nvidia
so after little searches on pcandparts i found

Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 Eyefinity $655.00
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 Eyefinity $578.00
Sapphire Radeon HD6850 1GB GDDR5 Eyefinity Toxic edition $290.00
Sapphire Radeon HD5870 2GB DDR5 Eyefinity Toxic edition $595.00
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB DDR5 Eyefinity FleX edition $207.00
Sapphire Radeon HD5750 1GB DDR5 Eyefinity $188.00

i think i cant afford more than 200 $ , is there is a noticeable difference between ( could they handle gaming ( like call of duty ) , i mean in the eyefinity mode ? ) :

Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB DDR5 Eyefinity FleX edition $207.00
And
Sapphire Radeon HD5750 1GB DDR5 Eyefinity $188.00

Do i need to upgrade my rams ?
Thank you
we should also take care of the linux compabitlity , i use debian (squeeze) 99% as my main OS ( configuring it , would be my problem but it should be compatible :) that's why i prefer nvidia , i know i'm annoying :P .

Can i hook up 3 with nvidia with multiple dvi outputs like the pic below?

http://www.pacificgeek.com/productimages/xl/H9361.jpg

or like this one : http://www.internetvideomag.com/images/2007Movies_Products/MatroxTripleHead.jpg

And this : http://www.elsa-jp.co.jp/products/graphicsboard/quadro_fx4700x2/img/ph_quadro_fx_4700x2.jpg
you can do that but 2 of the monitors would show the same, you can't do gaming on 3 monitors or drag stuff between 3, using that cable would be like watching a movie thats connected to two tv's, you can get the gtx460 if you want, its a little more than 200$ but its powerful and you can connect 3 monitors using 2xDVI and 1x hdmi

Thank You Shant :) i never noticed that nvidia driver that supports eyefinity dude thanks :)
gtx460 or gtx460 sli ( difference, if there is ? prices if you know, thanks in advance )
gtx460 or gtx460 sli ( difference, if there is ? prices if you know, thanks in advance )
The question isn't for me but I'll answer =P

SLI word means 2(or more) NVidia cards put into the MoBo (it should support SLI, and your power supply should be able to afford the power of two video cards) and connected by SLI bridge, they must be the same cards, let's say GTX 460 in this case.
CrossFire is the same idea, but for the ATI cards.

Regarding the difference, AFAIK (according to tests and benchamrks), it won't double the frames per second (the most important thing in gaming) displayed on monitor ( I'm talking, here, about one monitor. Google "three monitor difference sli" or something like this to find out if it's worth it).

And lastly, price will double for sure =P

unfortunately my Intel DG31PR has 1 pci express slot , so i can't make the SLI thing .
okay then i'm going to buy nvidia gtx460 or ati raedon 5770 , it depends on which one is more compatible with Linux , Thanks everyone Who helped me.

umm, I have the 1 gb nvidia gts 250 and it has 1 slot for vga, 1 slot for dvi and 1 slot for hdmi... and its only 137$ on pc and parts(without vat)....
AMD (ati) cards with Eyefinity allow three monitors with expanded view.

Nvidia cards allow two monitors with expanded view.

Nvidia SLI cards allow three monitors with expanded view.

Nvidia GTX590 (dual gpu) allow three monitors with expanded view.

P.S.: Stay away from AMD

Thanks guys, xterm only the gtx590 ?! what about the gtx460
im confused now !?
note, using a gtx460 with that processor will bottleneck, bottleneck means that a slower hardware in your pc prevents the faster one from being so fast, heres another way of explaining it, lets say the gtx 460 gives you 60fps in crysis 2, your processor will bottleneck your graphic card thus the game will run in 30 even thought your graphic card will do 60, although you shouldn't have problem running games across 2 monitors, its in newer games that will bottleneck, by the way, don't confuse gtx460 with gtx460SC, the sc one is slower, and do not get the 768mb version one, instead get the 1GB, to be honest id get a GTS450 or 550 with your rig
note the fps is just an example, doesn't mean your game will run 30 or 60fps like i said

EDIT: i just checked prices on pcandparts.com
considering there isn't much difference in prices between the gts450 and 460, the evga 460 seems the best option, i have it and i love it, its external exhaust so you don't have to worry about it heating up your case either, the 550 is N/A

price:
EVGA 01G-P3-1371-TR Geforce GTX460 1GB DDR5 Dual w/TV $215.00 PX-58
ok Thanks guys ,
xterm gtx590 is way expensive ( 800$ on amazon )
okay shant you havn't mentioned if gtx460 is able to allow three monitors with expanded view ( eyefinity ) ?
if yes what about the link provided by xterm above.
Thank you

Edit : i'm not that gamer , so i won't care about newer games working perfectly
xterm LOL for your next reply =D
