  • Ubuntu Unity vs Gnome 3 Shell vs Kde Plasma

Linux is on a roll in terms of UI. During our meeting we had a quick look at 11.04 with unity and saeidw showed Gnome 3 on arch. When I got home I wondered whether Kde had released a new interface and to my surprise they have.

Lets use this thread to discuss the pros and cons of each.
in my opinion they all suck , thank God there is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS that uses gnome2 for almost a year and Debian squeeze also use it for long time now,
im thinking of switching into xfce or maybe using #! with its nimble Openbox window manager..
unity and gnome3 are great for netbooks or notebooks that are only for social networking ,it doesn't fits for me
I switched to gnome because of KDE4.

Releasing a clearly alpha/beta stage product and claiming it is stable when it obviously isn't, then admitting that they only did that to get more people using/testing it. ugh.
So i got gnome3 working on 11.04 and I must say, this is extremely nice. You guys should give it a try.
Well i use Backtrack, i installed a lot of softwares that weren't available and i quite made it as a normal linux OS that can be used for any pupose like other Linux distributions. I just can't wait till 10 May for the release of Backtrack 5, it's going to be based on Ubuntu Lucid (10.04 LTS), it will support both 32 and 64 bits architectures and it will support kde, gnome and fluxbox.

i checked and used Ubuntu quite much, with different releases, and i really never liked it. I made Backtrack my primary linux distribution. 5 days left to go.

No offense man, but that's so ... 2009. KDE4 has been extremely stable since the release of 4.2 (aka "The answer"). The latest 4.6 is very smooth, you should give it a try.

Oh, and maybe I should mention, I hate KDE. With a passion. But you've got to hand it to them, that they did take care of the stability issue. By the way, branch 3.5 still gets support, if you're interested :^)
In the interest of testing my installation I pulled a windows virtual machine within vbox on gnome3. I'm planning on doing some heavy duty work. If the entire system keeps up, I'll probably drop windows from being my primary OS and just use it I integrated when needed.

Gnome Shell is a great step towards Linux being competitive in the decent UI market, very well done.

Don't you use Visual Studio on a daily basis? How could you switch to Linux?
Right, for work. That where the virtual machine needs to prove itself.

In the two years that we've known each other, that's the first time I ever see you praising Linux UI. I'm emotional ...

Saeidw and myself are really trying everything in gnome shell. Hopefully the more we try, the better feedback we can give.

Group hug xoxoxo

Sure, but that was the last straw the got me looking at other WMs, and I haven't found a need to look back since :)
7 days later
so whats the final decision? I am new to linux. I tried Ubuntu 10.10, but i couldn't handle how to install new apps!! Some of them even needed me to add a code!

The only program that worked is Google Chrome!

All Linux distributions are like Ubuntu? or there is a more user-friendly version for people who need to start from ZERO in Linux?
Well Ubuntu is the most user-friendly distro. I'm not sure if there's other easy to use linux distro, but i started linux on Ubuntu.

I have read that the subject is: "Ubuntu vs Gnome 3 Shell vs Kde Plasma" . So from the "vs" i thought that its about which one is better. I asked which one is more user friendly for beginners. Sry if it appears to be a hijack process.
AMDeeb: The subject is Ubuntu Unity vs Gnome 3 Shell vs Kde Plasma. All three of them are window managers, which is an interchangeable component of your installed Linux distribution. [basically its the UI you have when you're using Linux, but you can switch one for the other at any time]

Ubuntu is generally considered pretty user-friendly, open a new topic with specific questions you have and people will be happy to help you along with them.
