Hey all,
I dont know if anyone of you is havin difficulty drifting in shift 2. I am usin PC and a MOMO Steering wheel. It is nearly impossible to drift. I read over the net that the game is not optimized to drifitng with a wheel rather with a controller.
I am on difficult settings and havin NO problem beating other race types, except for drifitng which is frustrating!

I still haven't go to any drifting events, but so far I am still getting used to my new wheel: Thrustmaster Ferrari GT.
Since this is my first time with a wheel, it is going to take me more to time to get used to it in racing. I am planning on doing the drifting events much later.
Search the net for drifting settings for your wheel. Maybe you can find someone who has your wheel and who found the perfect set of settings.
ali_m3
Drifting events come up at around 10% Career. I think that your wheel has a built in preset in the game.
I'd like to hear your feedback when u try drifting.
thanks

hey i dont mean to change the topic of the thread, but i was thinking of buying a racing wheel; though i am not sure if it's worth it. does it really add a fun element to racing games, or it's the same feeling as racing from a gamepad or a keyboard? How about compatibility with new coming racing games? I am thinking of Logitech's G27, but am afraid of facing problems configuring the thing. do i have to change the settings for the wheel for each game, or is there a universal config that works with all games?

I keep hearing that you have to carry as much speed as you can.
@ MrCLass
I've had my first wheel for 3 days, and let me tell you, it changes the whole game. I want to re-play and finish shift 1 from how good it is. But I do recommend that you go and buy the G27 as your first wheel. Buy a cheaper wheel to try it and see if you like wheels.
MrClass
well i am very into racing games and i did try a Logitech GT on GT5; it was really fun. the wheel ripped my hands and it was more exhausting to finish a race; i liked that. the problem is that i dont want to pay for something and end up wasting time configuring the thing before running a game. plus im not sure how good the material is; breaking the thing will end up having a large paper weight. I am looking for a wheel that works on PC and PS3, the GT27 sounds good, any alternative?
Xsever
I bought the Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experiene which is the best entry-level wheel and it works on PS2, PS3, and PC. It cost me $50 here in Canada and I am use it to master racing wheels.
Once I feel it is holding me back, I will upgrade to a better wheel.
How much is the GT27 and do you live in Lebanon or abroad?
MegaCool
Its actually G27 from Logitech - one of the best steering wheels in the market now. It retails for almost $450 at Virgin Mega Stores.
But I also recommend the Driving Force GT from Logitech. It's specifically made for GT5 on PS3, but It also works great on most PC sim car racings like rFactor, iRacing and even arcade racers like DiRT, NFS games and Shift 2 Unleashed(which is a mix of arcade and sim). I have one and its completely worth buying especially the fact that it's much more affordable than the G27. I remember it costs almost a hundred bucks.
Once you install the driver, it auto-caliberates by itself, so no rocket science here. And yeah it feels much better than a pad, especially if you're a sim driving enthusiast, unless you want to use it on arcade racers, then I definitely wont recommend it, because arcades are made for pads generally.
Xsever
The G27 is $320 in the US/Canada.
Megacool, what sims would you recommend?
MegaCool
Xsever, I tried SHift 2 and to be honest, I find it pretty far from the label "most realistic racer ever" which EA was marketing it. The handling isnt realistic at all, still feels arcadey.
As for what I recommend, of course the most realistic sim racers are on PC such as rFactor, which is one of the best indeed. The game has a huge modding community as well, there's probably any car out there you can imagine, from F1 cars, indy cars, touristic cars, DTM, etc.. The handling is near perfect too, and there are a lot of options you can turn on or off to adjust the level of realism.
Other games I recommend are iRacing and LFS(Live for Speed). iRacing is built specifically for Williams F1 drivers, they practice using this game, and its sort of a marketing campaign for the company as well, but definitely on par with the best sim racers out there - it has a variety of cars as well, requires a subscription fee because mostly used for online competitions, but there's always the get it 'free' for offline choice :P
On consoles there's of course GT5 on the PS3 and Forza 3 on the Xbox 360.
Xsever
I like the offline choice in order to try out the game.
I am going to do some research tomorrow on rFactor, iRacing, and LFS.
With that CPU of yours, you should consider upgrading your GPU for better graphics.

@xserver
thanks for the link. Its nice to see what others have to say. Drifting in shift 2 is frustrating but u will need sometime to get used it with a wheel.
As for sims, i recommend LFS and fia wrc if u like rallying.
@mrclass
i agree with megacool, get that g27, amazing wheel with clutch and stick change. Costs 400 on pcandparts. I will get it in a few months myself as my older logitech is getting older now :)
@megacool
i think racing in shift 2 is realistic, i love how cars handle and respond, im just worried that drifting is either tooooo realistic or simply are physics fail...what do u think?
MegaCool
@ali_m3 To be honest I don't really like the weak force feedback in Shift 2 - the handling is quite weird plus it features some sort of exaggerated sense of speed with bunch of unnecessary blur thrown, and almost most of the cars I have tried so far have the same sound. Still its a great game, graphics are pretty, and I like the helmet cam view, plus the bonus fun factor it offers.
@Xsever
Yeah I know, my gpu is quite outdated - that's why I'm saving for a GTX 560 Ti from Nvidia. I want to experience with FSX at max graphics and achieve some 40fps+ @1080p - it runs like crap on my current rig and FS 2004 is getting old.
Xsever
I downloaded GTR 2 yesterday. I will be trying it in the coming days.
As for Shift, I am really enjoying it on hard since it poses a challenge. You can tweak all the blur and unnecessary things if you want using mods.
As for FSX, don't forget that it's more CPU-dependent.
MegaCool
Xsever dont you think an overclocked i3 + a decent GPU could handle FSX? I know its a bloody CPU-intensive game, because of the unoptimized programming and so. Anyway, have you tried it on your rig? How does it run?
ps. I've heard good things about GTR2, haven't tried though.
Xsever
Dedicated thread for FSX here so we don't go off-topic:

I tried Drifting in Shift 2 today and I found it very hard with the wheel. I am going to experiment with settings and configs and keep trying until I find the sweet spot.
Anyone else with helpful tips?
MegaCool
I'm digging through EA's forums to figure to drift using a wheel in Shift 2, I have to say its a bit frustrating to drift using the Driving Force GT. Probably it doesn't work using a wheel, though its weird for a "sim racer".
Found this while searching
It is a deciding factor if you can well drift in shift 2 unleashed. You should make sure that you keep enough speed getting into the corners and use the pad instead of wheels to drift in shift 2 unleashed.
Same here I'll tweaking and post my results.
Xsever
Ok so after many hours trying to drift with my wheel, I did not feel any realism in the way things were going. No matter how well I feathered the throttle, the car would just not maintain the drift. Heck! Even when I did not touch the wheel, the car would veer off right away.
So I decided to try my PS3 controller and boy oh boy what a difference!! Thanks to MotionJoy.com, I can use a PS3 controller on my PC and drifting all of a sudden became so real, controllable, and enjoyable.
I am still practicing and sharpening my skills, but I was able to get 1st place on hard in the events I played.
I urge EA to patch the game so that drifting acquires the same feel and realism the controller offers.
MrClass
Cool Xsever. I installed my PS3 controller as well with MotionJoy. At last I have throttle control via analog axis. Do you think that steering should be done with the other analog axis as well?
Xsever
I use the left analog stick to steer of course, R2 is throttle, L2 is brakes, and X is Gear UP and and square is Gear Down.
When your controller is recognized by MotionJoy as "PlayStation 3", click Options, then Import the file I am linking below, Press Open and then press Enable.
I took my time to fix up that file and all the buttons are now mapped and there are no conflicts/repeats.
Now set up your buttons in your game the way you want.
Enjoy.
