Seeing how the internet is so limited in terms of speed and caps in Lebanon do you guys think a mesh based wireless network could work ? At the very least to create a faster and uncapped p2p network and if possible get the internet from different sources (neighboring countries).
I'm not sure what the latency would be but theoretically it could work considering how small the country is and how densely populated each area is. Since we're not relying on any of the current infrastructure the government would have little say in what we do internally on the network, and it would be impossible to shut it down because of the redundancy. Unless of course they threaten each user but that's an entirely different issue.
An other problem I see is power but with the appropriate backups (UPS) and people that have generators might just be enough to keep the network going in case the power goes out in an area. I think wireless mesh networking could do so much for Lebanon. Think about gaming, voip etc which would thrive even if international connectivity sucks.
I plan to work on the project when I move to Lebanon this summer, hopefully I can come up with a design that makes sense. If you want to learn more about the technology have a look at:
