somebody using my router?

i think somebody is using my router...

just want to know what can i know other than i see my router giving him an ip..

like can i get his real ip and stuff like that?

hacking wise can i do anything?

information wise? what info can i get?

His real IP is the same as yours... you are using the same Internet connection.

You can know his internal IP, mac adress, and check his visited websites just by loging into you router... these are the most basic things that anybody can do.

If you have any linux skills, use a program called kismet. It shows clients connected to the router. A mac version called kismac is also available. If ur on windows i don't know of a way to do this kind of thing.
A quick guide (for you and others who don't know linux):
-Download BackTrack linux (very big file, good luck)
-Boot your wifi capable computer from it
-Wait for it to load and when you get to the command line input "start x"
-When the windowing system loads look arround for "konsole" and launch it
-Input "kismet"
-Press space, s, s. Scroll down to ur network name and press "c"
-You'll get the list of mac adresses connected to your router.
Note: don't freak put about the number of addresses, just check the ones with a "!" next to them, these are the real ones.
Another note: the sequence of keys to get a scrollable view is what i use on ubuntu, not totally sure about backtrack.

What can you do with the mac address ? If u have control over your router add the address to the mac filter.

@bluewolf, as Bij mentioned you can use Kismet or Kismac, if you are on windows you can use a tool called Netcut it shows you a list of devices connect to the network and their ip and mac addresses, you can also "cut" any of the devices from the network. Hope tat helps, good luck :)

I know this seems simple, but the first thing you should do is change your password to something strong and make sure you have WPA enabled on your wireless router. Restart the router to disconnect all users and have them reconnect with the new settings.

Only after you've done this should you start applying MAC filtering rules. If your router supports a default deny policy, you can use that and manually add a list of accepted MAC addresses.

A combination of secure authentication and hardware address filtering should be more than enough to secure your network. Good luck!

You can use mac filtering too on your router to allow specific devices to access your internet connection (unless that the other user is really skilled since this can be bypassed). This, added to a strong WiFi key will definitely restrict any foreign usage of your bandwidth.

And one more thing, home users tend to distribute their WiFi passwords to their friends. And friends talk too much. This reminds me of the famous quote:
"Passwords are like underwear... Change them very often."
