I'm sure many of you are right now preparing all sorts of pies in celebration of Pi Day (today is 3/14). I too once celebrated this constant as shining beacon of the power of mathematics, until I learned the truth.

Pi is not the true circle constant. That would be Tau (or 2*Pi).

While Pi is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter:
Pi = C/d
The true circle constant, Tau, is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its radius:
Tau = C/r
What is this madness, you ask? Find out more about why Tau is the true circle constant. The proof is in the Pi!

You can now go back to celebrating "Half Tau Day", and hopefully celebrate Tau Day on June 28th (6/28).
When i used to celebrate Pi Day, my wife would shake her head and say "get a life!".

Thanks for the info.
In engineering, tau i.e. 2pi is the big deal. But things can be solved like this: today we bake one apple pie. On June 28, we bake an apple pie and cherry pie. There, problem solved.

Your solution is both acceptable and delightfully yummy.
I'm in for the pie. Sounds delicious =)
pfffft, need some pie now :P

1 apple pie please
saeidw, you're thread just started a pie-craving frenzy, now I'm craving apple pie. MrClass, please buy me some Gala and Granny Smith apples in the weekend, we're baking an apple pie (oh, and get some chocolate ice-cream while you're at it, can't have pie without ice-cream).

hmm, strawberries are out, next week we'll make strawberry ice-cream...

i thought your were talking about Portal & Portal 2, "The Pie is a Lie"

Well you could celebrate March 14 and still have a life! You could throw a little party to celebrate it and share your joy around.

At least you're not driving around with loud blasting political music, waving flags, and chanting...
Here is a fun video that explains why the Pi is a lie, with the help of pies.
