  • A cool tutorial on how differential gears work

I found it on Youtube. It was pretty interesting, and though kinda old, was still very interesting to watch.

Which kinda raises a cool question: Do we have any mechanical expert here on LebGeeks? Maybe someone who knows how to build an engine?
A glow engine is easy to make. Its similar to the ones used in model planes.
A full internal combustion engine is more complex, only extra thing would be the ignition electronics.
the glow engine requires no circuits to function.

Cool video.

Well arithma is a mechatronics major, which is sort of a hybrid combination of mechanical and electrical expert. Besides, differential gears are taught to all engineers these days (except maybe civil and telecom engineers). They're a key ingredient in system designs.

I built with MrClass a plastic, operational model of a gas engine when I was like 11 (still have it, with spark plugs, pistons, crankshaft, timing gear and wheel, the whole deal):

This was about the same time we took about building gas engines in technology class at school. Not everything moves, just the pistons and timing belt, and the spark plugs turn on and off. However, the operation process highly resembles the real engine. But this is my limited experience in building an engine.
mesa, is it OK if I told you that I'm a little bit in love with you? =)
@rahmu: It's a geeky infatuation, you'll grow out of it (adorable though) =)
oh yes I remember this amazing kit dad got us from the USA. wish we had stuff like that here in lebanon.

bit off the subject: does anyone know a place in lebanon that sells such kits? or kits where you have to assemble a model car out of 500+ tiny parts? I am still in love with those kits, but can't find any here :(
@MrClass: Katranji, the one and only place I know, but they're a bit expensive. Search for them on their website: www.ekt2.com
I understood how it works when I bought and assembled a fuel R.C. car. It had 2 differentials, since it was 4wd.
On a slightly similar note, does anyone know where I could find Lego mindstorm in lebanon?

As a matter of fact, maybe. There's a center that teaches NXT Robotics programming for kids called "The Little Engineer" and is run by Rana Shmaitilli. In addition to the robotics courses, she was thinking of becoming the local distributor of the Lego Mindstorm robotic kits in the middle east.If you want her number, I'll PM it to you.
Xterm ! NO ! Get an arduino and learn some real robotics/electronics.

Actually, he can program the Lego Mindstorm with ROBOTC (it's C-based and unlike NXT, gives you a broader choice of commands to manipulate the robot). Furthermore, the Lego Mindstorm is an excellent way to get baby Raúl interested in programming (of course when he's 7 or 8) and it is much easier to start with NXT blocks then move to ROBOTC. In the end, Raúl just might like programming so much that he'll start looking for another language to learn: this is where Arduino comes in.

Bottom line: Yes, Lego Mindstorm is an excellent choice.
It is an excellent choice for retards who just want to make something move without bothering a brain cell ! If you want to program it using C just jump over to Arduino from the start. Their is no point in getting lego mindstormes if have your mind set previously at programming it using C.

Lego Mindstorms = Toy
Arduino = very broad hobby robotics. and with your programming skills ya Xterm, you will be doing wonders in no time. Heck I'd make you an Arduino just so you dont buy the stupid mindstorms ! I've got a batch coming out of the oven soon.
Oy I'm preparing for my little kid!

I care not for electronics!

I'm extremely interested!
@J4D, I want an Arduino board! When will they get out of the oven? :P

No you don't! Stick to one thing only (programming!!). Stick to ASP.NET MVC!
