Hey everyone,
I have a simple question to ask.
I have a lot of video files on my storage hard drive. Each video is an .avi file ranging from 175 MB to 700 MB.
As far as the hard drive performance is concerned, is it better to keep them like this as .avi files or is it better to zip (or rar) them into multiple files with a smaller individual size.
I do not have too much time on hand now to go deep into NTFS documentation, so I was wondering if anyone else thought of this before and/or if he has an answer.
Thanks a lot.

keep it as big files for better performance, because when zipping it the processor will have two tasks: unzipping and playing
BashLogic
define performance,
writing speed or usage speed?
for read/writing, single longer streams are always better (large files). having a multiple of small ones causes fragmentation and i/O throughput degradation.
usage speed, the time it takes for you to have your files accessible and usable by your applications.

By performance, I meant read/write speed and having large files makes sense because of fragmentation.
Thanks for your opinions.

I don't know much about NTFS but read/write speed is highly affected by the file system. But generally, a single big non fragmented file makes more sense.
