SMTP server ?

I am using a program on my laptop that has required me to enter my email settings.
In the setting i was asked to enter my email adress, password, SMTP server, and Port.
I want to use my hotmail account however i am not sure about the SMTP and port details.
I found http://email.about.com/od/accessinghotmail/f/Windows_Live_Hotmail_SMTP_Settings.htm and http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/mail-settings.html however i'm still not sure.
Basically this program will send an email to my email account so what should the settings be ?

Doubtful that you'll able to do this using hotmail. You're probably going to need your ISP's SMTP information.

Well I tried the windows live hotmail settings:
SMTP: smtp.live.com
Port: 587
The test email worked perfectly fine. However, after the program was activated I didn't receive any emails to my email account so basically that didn't work.
I have gmail, and yahoo. Should I use them? If not what other email clients would you recommend ?
Should I set up my own SMTP server ?
This program will work on a computer in another network (different ISP).

i recommend "gmail+thunderbird"

Make sure you are authenticating the SMTP Connection

POP3: pop3.live.com port:995
SMTP: smtp.live.com port:587

SMTP Autentication is required (any secure method)
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
