Hey all,
So the deal is my brother and i share the internet. We are currently subscribed to the 1mbps plan with IDM. At night, he opens his torrents and downloads at rates of 70-100Kilobytes and i'm left with barely anything. When i try to open a youtube video it takes me 30 minutes to load a 2 minute 360p video.
My question is how do i limit him so we each get a fair amount from the router without him knowing? We have the Thomsons T585v7 router.
Thank you.

hey all
i am 5 foot 4
dark and hairy
i have a curvy figure and ..
bummer..
ok ok ..
options :
1- shoot yourself and that way you dont need to think of your brother and his torrenting!
2- google and be enlighted
3- invest at least a week of your time to learn the abc of the internet and networking, setup linux as a gateway and make use of QOS
4- just give up
5- beat your brother untill he gives up on torrenting..
there you go, you got more than just one answer! pick one and make your life easier!

Just do what I am doing with my sisters...no more than 200-500 MB torrents downloads per month (So I don't get FUPed) and They have to limit their torrent client to 40KB DL and 3KB UP in double speed period (Since I play online most of the time).
Most of the torrent clients have this feature, so ask him to put a limit and shove off! :P
forgotten
1. Get a second account.
2. Don`t browse when he is loading.
3.Kill him ( THAT WAS A JOKE)
4.Limit the torrent client .
5. If nothing works Rip out his heart or his hard drive the result s the same .That was maybe a Joke....:P

Edit the settings in his torrent software without him knowing : reduce the number of upload/ download slots, put speed limit , install netlimiter
MegaCool
Change the ports of his torrent client for some random numbers, that way he cant connect to the available torrent trackers.
And tell him "I think the ISP blocked our p2p sharing ports'. Yeah that should work.

Is there an option in the router? Can you flash the router firmware? (Like replace it with WRT- Tomato).
Otherwise you can set up a linux gateway but it's complicated, although some live CD firewall solutions like smoothwall.org should be easier to manage.
But I recommend facing your bro. It is easier and you will have to do it anyway, coz if it's not bandwidth there will be a problem somewhere else...
hussam
Talk to your brother, explain what "bandwidth" is and ask him not to continuously use up all your bandwidth.

The problem is we have unlimited free nights with IDM so he doesn't care and he notices if the download is slow, he kind of is a nerd but with google skills. So i need something with the router that doesn't include his laptop.
