Hello everyone. Before I lay down the problems, I just wanted to say that:
- Yes I did my research
- Yes I did contact the necessary support
- No they did not reply
So here we go:
Obviously as the title says, this thread is related to a Mac server which I have at work. It's an XServe with Leopard Server 10.5.8 installed. The server has the OD, DNS, AFP, SMB, System Update, and Web services installed.
First problem: Our network is a mixed network with user computers that have Leopard 10.5.8 installed, and other computers which have Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I wanted to upgrade all computers to the latest Apple OS, which is Snow Leopard, but with the problem in hand I hoped I could downgrade all systems to Leopard (which is impossible for newly purchased computers). So what's wrong? On Leopard computers, I join the computer to the OD, it joins all systems go, takes 5 seconds to login with an OD user. On Snow Leopard computers, I join the computer to the OD, it joins all systems go, takes 10 minutes to login with an OD user. Even with the same user that logs on the Leopard and the Snow Leopard, the login on the Snow Leopard is always much more slower than the Leopard. Maybe compatibility problem? Well I don't think it's just compatibility problem; besides if it was, what's the components that make the client/server OSes not compatible?
Second Problem: If you login on any of the Mac computers whether its Leopard or Snow Leopard using a local user (not a user on the OD), and try to visit a site using https, the site loads. Users like the local admin account can visit sites like hotmail and gmail (which both use https when you try to login to your mailbox) without any problems. If a user from the OD logins and tries to open an https secured site, the site fails to load, giving error site experienced a problem loading. We do have an ISA server to protect us, but it seems the Mac server was also configured, or in someway automatically plays the role of an internet gateway. If the Mac server was off, all OD users lose connectivity to the internet, while local Mac users do not. Is there a way to turn this feature off from the Mac server so that all network activity just pass through the Mac server without any kind of filtering?
I kindly request that you only post issue related answers. Thank you all.
