Well this problem happened to me once but with the VGA,on another Linux Distro. I was trying to enable the VGA from the driver manager and suddenly got this systemerror message.
I think that error message is because there's more than one root user or admin applications running Like Synaptic or ...

can you show the output of the ifconfig command?
leblinux
I have fixed the wifi network of this laptop hp mini using kernel 2.6.31-14 and managed to update to kernel 2.6.31-19 on karmic. I can mail you the correct drivers by friday. You should put them under /lib/modules/<your current kernerl/kernel/net/wireless
load them by depmod -a
and modprobe <wl.ko>
it would load instantly
echo wl.ko >> /etc/modules <<>> would make sure it boots on startup.
So if you can send me your mail by Friday, I will send it.
OR
update to a newer kernel build ***
Goodluck.

I seriously doubt it's a driver issue. Read the error message, it's clearly a permission/lock problem.
People, people, people. It's not the 90's anymore. Stop yelling "DRIVERS!" every time there's a problem with Linux. Especially when talking about Ubuntu. If anything Ubuntu's only advantage over other distros is the (very often useless) availability of a plethora of drivers, you can be sure that it has HP wifi cards (we're not even talking about exotic hardware here). Finally 2.6.31 is kinda outdated, Ubuntu 10.10 comes with 2.6.35. Why would you want to install an older kernel?
I'm sorry if I sound harsh. I don't mean to. I'm simply saying that the good folks at Canonical spend a lot of time making Ubuntu as friendly as possible and got results that can often threaten the might "Mac OS X". Don't go loading new modules every time something feels wrong.
@lorcan: as m0ei said, your problem is probably that you have Synaptic open at the moment of connection. Try restarting your computer for example and tell us if the problem persists (and also show me the output of the command ifconfig in a terminal).

@rahmu : I am fully aware that his 1st thread regarding the lock error is used by synaptic or another software that is locking apt from installing updating ... etc. However the topic (error while enabling network card) is not related to his 1st thread as if he is trying to install from apt a software. But when he is unable or the wireless is greyed or no wifi under network icon its definitely related to an incorrect wifi driver.

Thank you everyone for your input, i will try leblinux's solution and will update you guys.
