Hello,

I am relatively new to these forums, as you all can see, and after "falling in love" with this community ( yes you can flatter yourselves :P ) these forums
have become a standard hourly visit for me.

Now on the Subject,

This is a call to all N900 and GNU/Linux users.

I have been playing around with my new N900 for the past week or so and i have gotten around a few nice and tricky hacks on it so i decided to start a thread.
the purpose of this thread is to join our knowledge about this beautiful device.

as a troll at times myself, i really appreciate this thread not being trolled too much :P ( i know, trolling is fun at times :P )

i will start with this wonderful feature ... USB Host Mode on the N900
yes you heard right ... plug in your USB Flash drive and use it :D.

Looks like there's no n900 users ?? :P
about the USB Host Mode on the N900 , i tried it and it worked,but it dosent work on all HDDs
i tried a 4gb veritech falsh disk and it worked, but a 320gb WD portable HDD didnt work,so it depends on the HDD
what did you try ??
and did you try to run Ubuntu 10 on n900 ?

hello,

unless i am mistaken, the reason it does not work with a hard disk is because the hard disk drains its power fro the usb port. a flash stick consumes much less power hence making it possible. the hacking of kernel enables to play the role but unless my memory fails me, the n900 usb port is passive due to rush in design and delivery to the market. being a passive port, it can not provide the required amount of power for the harddisk to spin.
if you attempt to use another source for power, then i think it should work.

another hack i tried was overclocking(will void your warranty tho, but i couldnt care less)
i overclocked to 800MHZ by flashing to power kernel
be cautious, the phone will heat up REALLY quickly ( my cpu temp reached 70degrees C, )
i quickly turned it off and reflashed the whole fiasco image to take it back to normal

i also tried MeeGo, the thing is it is slow,
since it is not architected for the ARM proccessors (MeeGo is a cross project between Maemo and Intel ... nuff said )

there is a lot you can do. I havent done much with mine since i dont want to hack the kernel. the issue is not with that itself but with backing up and reconfiguring everything from the grounds up. dunno maybe once i get another phone later i might start using other than the vanilla kernels.

there are numerous OS you can run on the n900 including android. the meego was not intended for the n900 nor designed to support it. there is a port that will make it work but lots of the function that will be in the meego will not be available on the n900 due to hardware limitation. one major difference is that the meego will be totally designed for capacitive screens and not passive as is on the n900. this sets a limitation on what can be done.

a little while back i was thinking of hacking the N900 in order to use it as a camera and data connection on a weather balloon. I still have not dwelled much into it but i guess once i get another phone, i will start hacking the n900. the idea is simple. have the n900 take pictures at intervals and dispatch them along with gps and altitude information. then stick it to a balloon and let it fly high untill it pops and let it land with a parachute. after which go and pick it up to see what pics were captured. it would transmit the pictures as long as there is a data connection but store as well.

another version is to combine it with kite photography. i was even thinking of attempting to use it as an end device to control, hence let it be the AI to fly an RC between given coordinates. the n900 has more than the required resources for that, just need the time which i do not currently have.

@ abouelchich , its useless to try it since the calling,sms is not working,so there is no point of trying,not to mention its full of bugs ,its just need more time
