Hey
I would really like to know why they don't let any other telecom company open in Lebanon?
EddieEC
My Economics teacher talked about this. If a third operator comes in, there will be competition for sure to attract customers, which is good for us, but if you think about it, the customers will be divided between three operators, and since Lebanon isn't big population-wise, they won't make enough revenue, and thus one of them will be forced to close. There's no room for a third operator.

^ not necessarily. The penetration of the Lebanese market is relatively low compared to the countries of the region. A third operator, with more competition, leading to lowering of prices, would lead to an increase in market penetration, therefore more subscribers overall, divided between the three companies. Not an Economics major but at least this is how I see it.

The government will make sure the lowering of prices is not significant. Maybe in 20 years it will become economic!

I was told that prices are high because of the VAT, taxes and the minister wants it to be high
Is it true?
proners
there were some talks about vodafone becoming an operator here, but i guess they don't want any real competition, they are obviously milking the sector ):
why isn't the IWEME cable functional yet, i want to watch this fella in HD ):

I heard about Vodafone coming to leb... but they wouldn't let it...
My conclusion is that telecom is a politic issue
Can someone proof me wrong?

and they yet lag about lack of investments and how money holders feel insecure so they invest somewhere else , and put their money in another country !! well of course if our government is going to disencourage investment in a neo-liberal country ( wich is supposed to be ) for some political or personal reasons , we're going to hit rockbottom for sure , that's no surprise..
MrClass
what can we say more about relating everything to politics? pffft. stupid government.

Well today i was watching on OTV, and she(forgot her name) was saying what the King of Dubai said in an interview.
A Tv Reporter asked the King of Dubai: " How much time do you think that Dubai will keep up rising and becoming better ? "
he replied: " As long as the Great whale is a sleep"
she replied: " What great whale ?"
he said: " Lebanon "
Not completely as she said, but that what i remember. And it's true.

See
We have all the capacity to become the country #1 in the whole region... but politicians want to bring us back to 1950... (if not 1850)

i bet when a lebanese politician reads this ( if somehow he reads it somewhere ) , he will just laugh and put his hand in his pocket and count the money he made from keeping the great whale asleep

Someone from inside MTC told me that the chance of ETISALAT is big in the next bid.

I have to partially disagree. the amount of profit the current operators are generating is a gold mine. no one wants to give up on their gold mines. the tariff is over the top and the competition would rationalize it and it would facilitate for real mobile based services which would generate its own macro economical growth.
BashLogic
the major ownership stakes in the local operators are owned by larger foreign operators. those operators have had to lower their fees in their own territory and thus attempt to secure revenue by having operations such as the ones in Lebanon run at a higher cost for a larger profit margin. everyone wants their cuts but its nothing new when it comes to mobile operators. there are those who are taking their cuts. such a monopoly would not brake unless a third operator comes in. in Lebanon you have several million subscribers. this figure happens to be an average figure from the lesser end yet it suffices to sustain, cover the costs and yield profit. yet in Lebanon, the tariff is way higher than elsewhere even thou that elsewhere the infrastructure costs are higher! all in all, its the monopoly, not the number of subscribers or the hills that make it expensive and limited.

Disagreement allowed. It's my teacher's view, not mine.

Question: If we organize manifestation and meeting will our voice be heard? That we want another telecom company?
