Hi guys,
I set up a decent Pc a couple of months ago, but I started having this annoying 1cm brownish square while working in photoshop. It pops up for few seconds every now and then. And sometimes when I'm running Adobe Premiere in the background I have this slider appearing also for seconds over the foreground running software. I use this pc for 3d animation renderings (15/20h per 6/10seconds sometimes).
You think I might have a faulty GPU or might this come from other hardware?
Here's the PC specs:
I have a 1GB Nividia 465 GTX running on an i7-930 with 6GB of Ram all sitting on a Gibagyte GA-X58A and I have a single 2TB HD (I know that's bad, I should buy a 2nd one)
Anyways, any insight on this would be really appreciated, I'm in the middle of a project and I'll be in really deep trouble if this one dies on me.

Before claiming it's faulty, try uninstalling the drivers first, then see if the brownish square still appears. Just uninstall and restart, then DONT install the drivers yet. If the brownish squares still appear, then the problem is not related to your graphic card. If the brownish squares disappear, then most probably the Graphic card is causing problems. After the above steps, download the latest WHQL drivers for your GTX465. Try also to change the VGA port on your graphic card, I am sure GTX465 has at least 2 DVI ports, so just switch to the other port and see if the problem still exists.

Hey thanks for the quick reply MrClass, I'm gonna give that a try, fingers crossed.

Nevertheless, if the problem persists, just return it back under warranty. I know that you get at least a full year of warranty.

Ok changing ports didn't work, uninstalling the drivers dealt with it, but when I reinstalled them 1ere's bar showed up again on an open folder.
Tako, I bought this card from a Leb online store, so I have to make sure first it's the GPU before I get through the endless process of exchanging it.
So what do you guys think? Does it confirm a faulty card or might it be something else? I have xp x64 running on this machine, and I know the Hardware are more compatible with win7 (the tech guy who installed xp for me said he had some bad time finding the right drivers), although I just double checked both Nvidia and Gigabyte's websites, they both have xp64 driver updates (I have the latest)

Here's what it looks like:

Did you try booting an other operating system? as in linux or win7? I'd try that before returning the card or anything... maybe its some new drivers you installed or some software that's conflicting w the Nvidia drivers....(?) ... and update the drivers if you haven't already done so just in case.

From the screen-shot you provided, that doesn't look like your graphics card is artifacting. Could be a software related problem.
Padre
i Dont think that's a faulty card.
Seriously consider switching to Win7. I've seen some serious improvements (30 to 50%) when rendering on Win7 than xp64. (Tested on different machines of my mini-render farm).
As for your bar, it did happen with me a few times while rendering on AE and one of my freinds too. it's not a bid deal usually. it's an Adobe tool bar. (I have a Quadro 4800 and 3800)

Yeah, I think that's what Im going to do, the Pc is still practically ultra clean, Im gonna try win 7 just to see. I actually insisted on staying on Xp so I can share files with my (much) older pcs. And Padre, I've seen this before also, but now I'm get it every single time I switch from 1ere to a folder. Anyways, I'm gonna try upgrading.
Thank you guys for the feedback, I have a tendency to easily panic being a control freak.

And if the problem vanishes with Windows 7, you can think about getting Windows 7 Professional. It has an XP feature that allows you to run software that would otherwise only work on XP.
MrClass
You cant print screen the problem. You have to actually take a photo using a digital camera. Now regarding the drivers issue, I agree that you have to try another operating system. Give Win 7 a try. And what about the "(the tech guy who installed xp for me said he had some bad time finding the right drivers)" ? That is seriously epic fail. Had some bad time finding the right drivers? Seriously? Just go to, you know it,
WWW.NVIDIA.COM ?!!?!?
How hard is that? And get your drivers from other there. (Im not being sarcastic on bibijou, but on the tech guy).
So anyway, if the artifacts show up again, its a graphic card problem. But please watch out the temperature of the GPU when you process 3D. Stressing out the GPU to the max for a long may not be under warranty rules.
Padre
Apparently u never worked on XP64 extensively ..... it IS hard to find drivers for it. trust me. Most of the suppliers dont build for XP64, the simply go to Vista/Win7. and note: the guy didn't say "graphics drivers", he said "drivers" ... i'm sure it's for the whole system :)
bibijou
You got me there, that's my 1st 64, but I know it wasn't graphic drivers, it was an os thing but he just didn't want to say it. You know tech guys tend to stay blurry on details when they talk to chicks, it drives me nuts. Anyways I built the Pc myself (wasn't my 1st) but having only design background I always leave OS installation and Bios stuff to others. I double checked them anyways as soon as I got it back, re-installed all recent updates for every hardware I got. I'm gonna give win7 a try in a couple of weeks when I wrap up my animation.
But Padre I so disagree with you on the 32vs64. I'm working on a "treasure island" style animation right now, and have plenty of grass and scattered flowers. At one moment I discovered that 3ds max x64 just wont read/render quicktime movies for some obscure reason, so I tried to switch to max x86, and had instant crashes, none of my sequences even opened, so I'm definitely going for win7 x64. Don't care for programs installed on this particular machine other than graphic apps, I have 3 other x32 computers for that.

Dont get me wrong :) I am an advocate for 64 bits, all my machines are 64 bits ! I'll post some of our work here (we just started) later. For instance we NEVER render or read QT ... only image sequences, and multi pass. you later composite and finally render to QT.
As for your grass / flowers what are you using ? You will soon find that 6GB of ram wont be enough if ur gona add 3D MB !
Good luck on your animation ! looking forward to see your final scene :)

:D in the flesh, i'm psyched! how do you know me?
Anyways, i'm an avid tga user, but I needed QT for transparent animated materials, (I have animated 2d characters in 3d environment, and no compositing is not an option in lots of my sequences) I ended up using uncompressed avi + alpha ones, paid a lot in size, but still sticking to x64.
