  • LimeWire Shuts Down After Losing Court Battle With The RIAA.

The Gnutella-based download client LimeWire has ceased all its operations after a U.S. federal judge granted a request from the RIAA [1]. Limewire was ordered to disable all functionalities in the current application to prevent users from sharing copyrighted material. The verdict is expected to have an unprecedented impact on the P2P file-sharing landscape.

A few months ago the RIAA asked a New York District Court to shut down the world’s most installed file-sharing application, LimeWire.

The record labels argued that the Gnutella-based download client might have caused billions of dollars in lost revenue and that it’s therefore one of the largest threats to the music industry’s revenue. Today, RIAA’s request was granted by a federal judge.

So, what do you think ?
I find it NOT funny at all ! Though i don't use Limewire.
Users are moving away from Limewire anyway, in favor of file sharing sites and of course torrents. Limewire was vulnerable because it is based in the States. I wonder what they'll do next
The majority of these torrent websites are already targeted and sued. So it's a matter of time before they go down next.

Not to forget the fact that thepiratebay tried to buy a micro-island (sealand). And lately the PPI (pirate party international) were trying to launch a torrent site into orbit just to find a way to be clear from all those laws.

LOL!
That sucks... How am I supposed to download music now? :/
I stopped using limewire a long time ago, but that's one serious bad news..next its going to be torrents, they successfully brought down mininova last year, another major one most probably will be shut down, thepiratebay is based in Sweden that's why basically its still alive...

Kassem you can always get mp3's from indexed sites if you search in a proper way, direct links ftw :D

to hell with limewire , just as long as they don't touch uTorrent
another one bites the dust.

We should consider opening a torrent website here in Lebanon, you know once they fix the whole internet situation. There are no laws against digital copy right infringement here (and the government wouldn't bother with them anyways) Well call it Sou2 el torrent :P
yeay! no more stupid limewire. I just hate this virus infected internet service :P

naaah..... anything 'illegal' that goes large scale attracts lots of attention wherever you are... (see TPB). but cool idea nevertheless lol
Limewire was awesome, I got really pissed when I read the news.
I think it is a good thing. Illegal sharing of copyrighted media needs to die.

I, as citizen of the republic of Lebanon, where Illegal DvDs are sold as the Norm in almost every shop, second this opinion :)

.....though I wouldn't count on it happening any time soon :/

Agreed, yet not fully.

I completely disagree that media should be copyrighted. You morally cannot forbid anyone from reproducing ideas. An mp3, a video, a software are nothing more than ideas on how to assemble and disassemble bits on your computer, a hardware you have bought for a price. You should be free to do whatever you want with your computer, and the copyright laws existing should (and most probably will) vanish into a dark corner of Human memory.

However I do not encourage illegal file sharing, exactly for those reasons. Because it is my own very strong belief that illegally sharing those files give copyrighted material a legitimacy. As long as people keep breaking the copyright rule, the copyright rule will still exist.

For example Open Source software would have long prevailed in Lebanon if people had to pay for their software. Same goes for music, video, texts and the rest.
