I have an old AMD sempron 2300 with 1GB ram, a NVIDIA 7300 GT card. It has two hard disks. One has 40 GB and I have linux installed on it. The other hard disk is 80GB (mounted as /home). Both hard disks are over three years old.
The 80GB hard disk is used for compiling stuff so it's constantly "under stress" but I never had problems with and it was free of bad sectors till three days ago. This friday, it started going into read-only mode and when I restart, S.M.A.R.T detects 100 bad sectors each time. So now it has 302 bad sectors.
I don't want to buy a new computer partially because I spent three years customizing my archlinux installation with each package recompiled with extra optimizations so I just need to replace the hard disk and also because I have to pay for a lot of other things each month so I'd feel guilty if I spent money on a whole new machine.
Anyone knows where I can buy a 80GB IDE hard disk as soon as possible? (preferably before tuesday).

I dont think you are going to find any brand new IDE Hard-discs. Try looking for used ones in some stores or any people you know that might have used ones.

Buy a SATA to IDE converter, and buy a new SATA HDD.
You won't find any new IDE hard disks these days.
Try pcandparts.com

I ordered an got a new 160GB IDE drive today. It's brand new (came in a closed case) and I verified that using power cycles count in S.M.A.R.T.
