  • [help] Recovering SMS after restoring factory default settings

Hey all, i got sony ericsson w595 and accidentally restored factory default setting erasing everything on the phone memory including sms
i didn't perform any backup so hundred of messages are gone !!
so is there any software that can help me recover my sms ?
btw i tried some recovery softwares (Recover My Files -&- EASUS Data recovery) but it didn't work
Any ideas geeks ??
I don't think you can. You restored, so they got deleted.
There are ways, but it can be very complicated. I don't have time to go through it right now, because I have to get out soon. But you should look up techniques called data carving. I have an article written about iton my blog. It won't solve directly your problem though.

Further research should be done. It might take some time, but it is doable. It all depends on how geeky you are, and how much you care about the lost sms.

Hmmm i thought it's like recovering deleted files after formatting a hard drive, but the problem is it's only recovering media files (pictures and mp3s) and some other unrelated files

I searched a lot !! and tried different softtwares (Data Doctor Recovery - Sim Card .. etc ) but it's useless
I'll take a look at your blog and see what i can find
And does anyone know where are saved sms on a mobile phone (w595 - java os) ??
Thanks Joe for pointing me at your blog, i already know some of these stuff, but i dont have Ubuntu Live Cd (I will get one if there is no other solution) and by the way i dont know the file type (i dont know even where the sms are stored) and Foremost seems to be like other recovering software i tried
I'm getting desperate, i guess i'll just live with it, i should've performed some backup
It's still worth a shot.

Forget about Ubuntu, your goal should be to mount the phone internal drive on your OS, so that you could run a data carving program. USB connection is usually enough. Problem with Data Doctor is that it only carves the SIM card. Try running Foremost (or other) on your hard drive. Only problem is: I do not know what type of filesystem they're using. It should be the first thing you're looking for.

Problem with data carving is that it is not 100% reliable. As a matter of fact, the more you use your phone, the more your sms will be overwritten and the less you'll be able to retrieve them. So I'd also suggest stop using your phone all together, until operation is over.
