Hey everyone,
Over the past few days I've been trying to install MacOSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop. After several attempts that failed, I finally found a way to successfully boot in MacOSX.
This topic is not supposed to be a
tutorial because I'm definitely not in the position of writing tutorials - simply because I'm still a complete noob, but a good learner though. So having that out of the way, this is just to share experience among LebGeeks members.
Here's what I did/you can do:
1. Get a MacOSX copy. You can either buy a retail version or use some patched distro from all over the internet. (from personal experience, I'd say buy your retail version).
2. Boot into MacOSX installation DVD. Once the MacOSX installer runs, use the Disk Utility from the Utilities drop down.
3. Locate your hard drive, click on the Partition tab. Choose Two Partitions from the options available and set the sizes as you prefer.
4. Make sure one of the partition's format is set to
NTFS-3G while the other is set to
Mac OS Extended(journaled). Then execute the partition.
5. Close the Disk Utility and follow the instructions to complete the installation on the partition you've chosen for MacOSX.
6. Once the installation is over, your PC is going to restart. Remove the DVD and insert a Windows DVD instead. Install Windows on the remaining partition. This should be very straight forward...
7. When the installation is over, your PC will boot straight into Windows. Get a trial copy of MacDrive (or buy it if you like - it's actually worth it) which allows you to view and manipulate Mac partitions/files/drivers...etc from within Windows.
8. Install MacDrive and make sure you can now browse your Mac partition (inside My Computer).
9. Search online for a boot loader. I would recommend Chameleon Boot Loader. (there are plenty of tutorials that would teach you how to install it). On the other hand, you could download
this BootCD.iso file which is basically Chameleon boot loader and burn it to a CD.
10. Use the BootCD and let it load. It will provide you with a menu that shows 3 options(icons): BootCD, NTFS(Win), Mac. Go to Mac and click the down key on your keyboard to open the available options, choose Verbose Mode and press Enter.
11. You will be presented with vertically scrolling text saying that certain packages are being loaded until, eventually, you hit a
kernel panic error.
12. Read what the kernel panic is about then search for kexts (Kernel Extensions) and fixes for this error which are relevant to your hardware. There are PLENTY of kexts and fixes available online. The OSX86 community has done a great job so far.
13. Once you find the right kexts for you, boot again into Windows. Browse the Mac partition (with the help of MacDrive). Locate the /Extra/Extensions directory and copy the kext into it. If you did not find this directory then locate /System/Library/Extensions and paste them there.
14. Boot again into the BootCD, go to the Mac icon. Type -f -v and press Enter. You will see the scrolling text again. You can hope that it will boot into MacOSX now, but if it didn't, you'll receive a kernel panic error again and all you have to do is repeat the last 3 steps again until you finally boot into MacOSX successfully.
15. That's it. You've got yourself a MacOSX running on your PC along with Windows. If you would like to boot into Chameleon boot loader everytime, then search for online solutions (there's a trick you can do by placing a boot.ini file in your C:\ drive). But personally I've choose to boot into Windows unless I insert the BootCD.
As I've said in the beginning, I'm looking to share our experience on this subject. There are many other ways to install MacOSX on an Intel or AMD based machine, one of which is to use VMWare (I'd like to know how I can do that!).
