  • Internet Explorer 9 Beta 1 Is Now Available

IE 9 Beta 1 is now live and you can download it from here check it out and please post your feedback about it. I am really interested to see how the new IE is especially in terms of support for CSS3 and HTML 5, and its performance in general.

I would have loved to try it today but I don't want to download it since I am consuming too much from my quota for this month. Anyways if someone can get an offline installer for IE9 and distribute in the next lebgeeks meeting it would be awesome.

Have a good day :)
What the hell !
I downloaded a version of IE 9 few MONTHS ago !

Well I am not much updated about windows software usually except through forums and communities around, today at dreamincode.net they were saying that the beta is available for download so I thought I should share the news. Mention in, first post under "Featured Content".

Btw Yorgi, which version did you get? I guess you have the alpha version.
Finished Downloading this Beta 1 Version, and currently installing it.

Feedback:

Change #1- The IE icon is a bit different (lighter colors :P)
Change #2- More requirements to download and install before the IE9. (after the 36 MB .exe executable download, i still have to download updates and other shitty windows stuff). Compared to the 8 MB for FF 3.6.9 !
Not bad, 95 on acid in a Beta 1
Okay, IE9 Beta 1 is the Gayest browser anyone could ever use ! Take a look !

1- Notice the first tab! i still don't know what is it about ! i can't even close it !
2- What would happen if I opened 10 tabs simultaneously ? They don't even fit in that tab bar...
3- IE9 Beta 1 crashed twice in the past 10 mins ! That's an improvement. (It used to crash twice a minute :) )
4- The "Back" button is a total fail, they didn't place it correctly !
5- Pages fade out after a while if the browser is inactive. (They're saving power, and going Green!)
6- Another major improvement to IE9 - The icon has now lighter colors.
7- Bill Gate's idea of being different : Firefox's tabs are under the URL bar, Chrome's are above. We should be in the middle then ! See, we're indeed different !

Bill Gates? What?

I wonder if the tabs can be relocated under the location bar. Can you check it out?

Also, does this replace your previous IE? Or is it a separate installation?
Are you guys seriously considering installing a "new" version of IE on your machines? Isn't it enough that it comes bundled with Windows?

Tabs can't be relocated under the location bar. And yes, it replaces the previous IE :) (a total download of 50 MB - Setup + requirements)
They also updated their download manager inside IE.

Yorgi wroteyes, it replaces the previous IE :)
Darn. In that case I'd rather wait for the gold release.

I'm not sure I understand your logic. Why not update? It's important to have up-to-date software, especially when the new release is so different.
95/100 on Acid would be great. Not only would it save us web developers a great deal of headaches, but it also would show acknowledgement and respect from Microsoft to standards they do not put themselves.

GUI looks ok, but I'm far more interested in the browser engine. Let's hope we'll be happy.

Anything from Microsoft with a 1 or 2 as a version number will be infested with bugs
And is gay the right word? But it really surprises me. The preview was actually much better.
1- Notice the first tab! i still don't know what is it about ! i can't even close it !
That's reserved for future use...
2- What would happen if I opened 10 tabs simultaneously ? They don't even fit in that tab bar...
You should be thankful you can open 3 tabs at once.
3- IE9 Beta 1 crashed twice in the past 10 mins ! That's an improvement. (It used to crash twice a minute :) )
That's because they added so much stuff in it, including SVG support and I guess all the HTML5 hype stuff. Hey this is Microsoft, after all! They will hang on to a seriously outdated piece of code for ages before some gurus from the open source / unix world will redesign the whole thing from scratch... then the software will last another 2 decades again... and they cycle continues... That's what happened with windows and I guess (hope) it'll happen with IE.
4- The "Back" button is a total fail, they didn't place it correctly !
Yeah I saw that. Very amateurish from Microsoft. How many thousands employees to they employ again?
5- Pages fade out after a while if the browser is inactive. (They're saving power, and going Green!)
That's the weirdest "feature" ever
6- Another major improvement to IE9 - The icon has now lighter colors.
I bet it took them months of deliberations to reach that...
7- Bill Gate's idea of being different : Firefox's tabs are under the URL bar, Chrome's are above. We should be in the middle then ! See, we're indeed different !
Lol that is totally ridiculous considering all the space that is wasted on that huge, blank bar on top of the window.

Quite a funny comment! :D

I would definitely update my Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, but IE? No thanks. I only use it for testing purposes anyway. It's not like I'm going to actually browse websites using it. I wish I had version 7 instead of version 8, this way I'd make sure that the websites I develop are actually compatible cross-browser starting with IE7 without having to ask my friends to do it for me.

You should test on the latest stable and widely used version (so yeah not 9...) then go backwards. The latest versions are more standards compliant. If you want to test using earlier versions IE there is free software that lets you do that.
Typical.

People used to bitch about IE's lack of support for standards and now that they've caught up to their rivals and surpassed them in terms of performance for all the news features, you start bitching about the user interface.

How about you take a couple of seconds before blabbling nonsense and reading this review.

Unlike other browsers that splurt out versions and patches, Microsoft releases major versions in times that incorporate all the features. You won't see them simply supporting a video tag *cough* firefox *cough* and releasing that to the public with the shittiest performance possible, instead they take advantage of the GPU to give you the best performance possible and that's just a very simple example.

If you want more examples you can head over to the review and read it, or you could check the MIX10 link i've posted ages ago on these forums. The release you see in front of you is a Beta 1, which will probably mean there will be a Beta 2 and a final.

Tip to the wise: If you don't like a certain application just don't use it. If you want to bash a certain application without having solid facts that support your arguments, no one will listen to you.

I don't even use MSIE but i'm capable of appreciating certain features of an application.

I don't use it to browse either, but that doesn't mean I don't update.
Got IE6 on one machine, IE7 on another and IE8 on another. For testing. My browser of choice is FF.

@xterm - agree with you. What matters in the browser engine; people will get used to the interface or find ways to modify it. I'm glad the most widely used browser is finally catching up. Microsoft kept using the keywords "same markup" in their marketing text, and it looks like they've delivered.
