Hey guys,
I've recently bought a Nokia N97 and I really liked the Maps application that shipped with it. Unfortunately, I cannot get the GPS to locate my position or anything like that. I tried it from my balcony but it didn't work. Today I was in Beirut, Hamra and still nothing works. I keep getting this msg "No GPS Signal".
So does that mean:
1. The GPS receiver in my N97 is screwed.
2. There is no GPS signal in Lebanon.
3. There seems to be a trick to get it working but I'm just not getting it.
Any help?

what might be happening is that because your gps hasnt been used yet, it doesnt have a default position making it longer to get a position. what i would recommend is trying to connect your maps app with a wifi or network connection for the first time so it knows where to look first and then it will work on its own.

Actually there is a default position. and it is somewhere in England. The phone is not brand new, it is a used one and I believe the one who used it before was living in England (thankfully it's still in a great condition). Also, I've already connected it to the internet using my Wireless LAN, and I've located some of the places I usually visit (including a pharmacy that is 20 meters away from my house).

then thats the problem, when you travel long distances, your phones gps takes some time before locating your current position again. it used to happen with my n95 and blackberry whenever i traveled. just wait using your wifi and stay in a outdoor place so that you can pick satellites signal.

gps works great in leb ... i didn't expect it to be this good and accurate here ... i used a lebanese map GPS app on iphone today worked like a charm ...
i used to have the same problem with n78 never got it to work though

With the iPhone, I had to leave it outside (in view of the clear sky) for max 1/2 hour with a GPS-enabled app on, for it to "sync" the GPS the first time. I don't know if it's stupid or good advice, but in the case of the iPhone that was recommended online and I did it, the GPS works fine now. Dont expect it to work great indoors thought, it is mostly for outdoor use.
Try that on a mountain top or something, if that doesn't work, and you don't find anything online, then maybe there's something wrong with the GPS receiver.

The GPS signal is the same all over the globe. The satellites providing the service are not geostationary, but have overlapping orbits in a sense that at any given location you can lock onto at least 4 of them :)

OK I'll go with rolf's suggestion to try and sync the position. So basically you're saying I have to open the Maps application, and keep waiting until I get a good GPS signal (like 3 or 4 bars maybe?) and then try to locate my position via GPS?

as soon as you get satellites you will be located on the map, no need to do anything but opening the maps app.

Yep, just put the phone on something stable where there is a good GPS signal (open sky), open an app that uses GPS, and leave it there for several minutes. That is my proposal. I am not a specialist of anything, it's just what I would have tried if I were you.

Two days ago I tried that in the South and it worked! Today I tried it on my balcony but with no luck. Then I tried searching for solutions online and I stumbled on
this conversation from Nokia. So I decided to update my Ovi Maps application and now I'm thrilled about it! The new version looks better and performs ALOT better! It located my position (in my house - on the balcony)
instantly! Plus there are many new features that are simply awesome! Anyone that has a Nokia N97 should try it out, let me know what you think :)

I own the N97 and I use the maps application and Garmin Mobile. I realised that whenever I hold the phone I barely get enough reception, but when I put the phone on the dashboard of my car it finds a satellite in like 2 minutes. Also I went to Nigeria in the summer and tried the maps there, with 3G connection I get a satellite lock in like 5 seconds.

well what happend is to me the same my GPS in my Nokia N95 is screwed after i changed the cover can it be fixed? i think the senser of the gps stoped!

the antennae of a phone are located in its cover, chances are you got yourself a knockoff cover with poor quality, or absolutely no antenna :P

seems thats the issue and i have no time to put the phone to fix it

I have Nokia N95 8GB and GPS really works well whether you're in Lebanon or not. This summer I travelled to USA and used my phone as GPS. I came back to Lebanon and GPS worked with no issues. I did not have to connect to Wifi, the GPS just worked. My sister has a N97 mini, and GPS lock takes time. Every phone seems to have a certain duration for GPS lock. N97 (the regular one) has very fast GPS lock, even in Lebanon. For best results, make sure you're in open space, the skies above you are clear, and put your phone on your palm with some inclination.
