Hey guys,
I always wondered why does download speed starts out very high and then comes down until they reach my alloted connection speed (512 kbps). During the days of dial-up, that used to happen too.
As an example to clarify stuff, I was downloading the other day a video file where the download speed started out at 200 kb/s and then gradually went down to 64kb/s. Why does that happen?

Faulty software that estimates speed.
Usually it is browser, it buffers data till user press confirmation dialog, and then incorrectly counting this data coming from buffer - as received from internet with high speed.

So its the software fault..... Thanks.....

Yes it might be a software fault, but I once read on the internet that a good isp should give more speed then what you choose, and then lock you to the speed you chose example: I had 512kb speed mobi, and I noticed that they were giving me a 1mb but I was locked to 512kb at day, and in the double speed service they unlock me and give me 1mb, but what I noticed during the day is that the speed also starts like you said more then what I have then goes back to the normal 512 speed.

Or a packet loss or request time out then suddenly burst them all at the same it this happens if you noticed any stopping.

I dunno why none of you thought about caching

isn't this feature called Burst? for example double the bandwidth for the first 2 MBs and then back to normal for the rest of the dl
MegaCool
Yes thats burst enabled speed, it happens with me sometimes on visp, first 2 mb gets downloaded at a 100+KB/s then gets down to the regular speed..nothings faulty here.
