I suck at Chess

I have always wanted to play this game and ace it. My younger brother beats me all the time and it bugs me to death! Are there like books for programmers to play this game. I just want to beat his ass and call it over.

I play chess since I was a kid, I used to beat lot of friends, but lost also in most of the tournaments at university, why? because of the damn timer !! I learned that you don't have to only think but to think really fast... There are too many books that teach you strategies ( offensive and defensive). Some people I know have mastered most of the classical well-known strategies and can defeat you in less than 20 moves. I tried to learn by reading but it's just too vast and needs lot of time.

It has a lot of history, and although it is useless in its self, you can use it to make someone else feel bad, you can use it to have fun, to dominate another person, to strain your mind.
It's as useless as sex is to reproduction: it's not necessary anymore, but is quite lots of fun if you get the hang of it.
I still suck at chess (I shouldn't have linked it with sex though, now I seem like a I do suck at both)

If I create a program that plays chess, does it mean am smarter than someone who actually plays it manually? Who gets the credit for beating the other player, me or the pc? Is it transitive?

I am thinking of strategy that I can cope with. One that does not require lots of memory. I am thinking of a minimalist chess playing rule book. Something along the lines: Gambit the horses, the queen and the bishops. Get your pawns up front. Use your fucking mind. I want to make the ones using strategy books helpless.

@arithma if i take it to a game developing perspective then no developers arent the guys who best play their games and this is logical.(nice example though)

First of all, "wind" ? In English it is said "won" man, please use proper English words.

Chess is a great game, I love it! And no it is not something useless at all, at least you would be using your mind and logic, it is quite fun and entertaining too IMO, btw kareem, if chess was a useless game to you, what would you say about video games? :)

Study to get grades? Manage to gain profits? Get fame? these are stupid goals for a geek to pursue, a geek never studies just to get good grades, or works hard just for the money. Geeks study, use their brains and work for fun and for self achievement, second comes money and fame and the rest of the stupidity the whole world is running after. So IMO, chess is a game well suited for Geeks :)

so basically they are the only ones whom you'll have direct relationships with and a lot of it.
When you say doing all this for fun then you live in Utopia not the real world what i am talking about is the real world.
As for video games you cant generalize here because there are a lot of genres and there are a lot of Chess video games too, i cant say anything more. Take MW or the whole CoD franchise it has gained activision Billions and MW2 sold more than 15million alone, tell me one good difference between them.. nothing they are all kill or be killed straight and stupid but the best thing is that it is giving activision profits.

I am not saying that like all Lebanese firms they just copy and paste but maybe this game is too over-hyped and Activison isnt investing part of the money on better development.
Btw they have registered new domains for a Star Wars CoD(cheers).

P.S: i am not a Geek.

No not at all ayman. I mean yeah we did go off topic, but I was just expressing my amusement with the divergence we had here.
Anyway, I do not think of myself as a social separatist geek. I love programming to become intertwined with real life and for it to have immense effect.
Chess can wire your brain to go fast, formal, and it can be a freaking way of communication. Warlords used to play chess to dominate each other. (If I can beat you at chess, definitely I can beat you at war.) Don't underestimate this fact.

The analogy is a little bit off. You should be comparing the people who invented chess versus the people who create games. Using assists in FPS for example is cheating, even if you wrote it yourself. I guess it is the same thing here. Even if I can create my own automated assistant for chess, it would be considered cheating.
Chess requires a huge investment of time, and I can't dedicate myself to it; that's why I want to find a shortcut that requires less investment. I am thinking of a minimalist's method to chess.
If you think about it, chess is purely discrete mathematics. Game Theory should apply well. Though again, building bikes doesn't make you a better cyclist.

You forgot that in War we have Intelligence which gives an extra edge and dont forget the cash(USA).

na its not useless, when i was at school i got addicted to chess and i used to play 20 to 30 matches a day (unlike these days barely 5 matches a month) , so playing chess that much made me think in a faster way, think in a non linear way and math seemed easier to me. its a good practice for the brain. It make you "non borne".
