^^ since the early 90s there were plans to open 4 more hydro plants, to have 5 in total with kar3on. Every energy minister who took this ministry since 91 said he'll give that priority and put the plans to action. I don't think i need to say more :P

As for Lebanon selling energy to our neighbors once they run out of oil, they're mostly all going nuclear, which is still until today the only large scale real solution to energy needs/pollution/costs of energy/.... UAE already contracted someone to start the plans and they are supposed to start building by the end of this year or beginning of next year i believe. So I don't think they'll be needing us (that's if we ever manage to produce enough electricity for everyone in Lebanon 24/7, coz we would need to reach that before selling electricty)

As for what i find ridiculous it's the amount of people who feel the need to drive an SUV in the city. Enno why in hell do you need a Cayenne GTS or a Hummer in Beirut? A normal car wont make it to the top of the speed bump? Fine, lebanese are too proud to use a bus, prestijon ma byesma7lon, but why an SUV?
Thank you for the overview battikh about hydro. It's a shame that since the 90s till now we have pretty much accomplished nothing when it comes to the electricity dilemma. I guess we need someone like Minister Baroud!!

As for nuclear, it remains polluting. The bottom line for us is that Lebanon has a lot of natural characteristics that will help it almost self-sustain itself from an energy point of view. We just need to harness this "free-energy" (Solar and Wind)
+1 for Nuclear !
Then Israel/Palestine will have a reason to announce war on us.. no lets stick to renewable energy.
Xsever wroteAs for nuclear, it remains polluting.
Nuclear doesn't produce air pollution.
The "only" pollution it generates is nuclear waste, which is treated and stored safely, not affecting the environment at all.
The only problem with nuclear is safety.

Especially in Lebanon! :D Houwi mn doun nuclear w betdalla che3li :D ( Lame translation: Even without nuclear it is always burning in Lebanon) :D
Guys are you for real Lebanon+Nuclear=? i bet that politicians will robe the nuclear stations and use them for there own companies and give some energy to our neighbors(sell them i mean).
Nuclear, hahaha. That would be the cake. Lebanon doesn't have any needs for nuclear. It just needs honest people running the electricity, and hell. Privatizing it would be great. But the pockets of our leaders need to keep overflooding.

Plus, nuclear. Hrmm...I can see one car bomb, or one missile doing just a tad bit of damage. Also, where the hell would you want to build such a plant?

I discussed privatizing the electricity in Lebanon with my Finance/Business law doc and he said that the electricity division is the stupidest part to run in the government and privatizing it may lead to higher prices.
Nuclear Energy is OUT OF THE EQUATION IN LEBANON. No Way ! We are a very small country; we do not need it.

With more efficient generators and transmission lines, along with renewable energy sources, we will be able to sustain ourselves. We just need the will !
Not the will, they just need to move their damn asses. So much wasted and stolen electricity.

As for privatizing. Well, there is no real private company in Lebanon.
MTC, Alfa, Terra, Cyberia. All of them are "private" but all of them have the exact same price.

Privatizing creates competition, however. All the big companies here agree to one term and that's it.

Look at internet in KSA. When blackberry was given to the public it was 100SAR for 99MB from Saudi Telecom.
Then Mobily came in and said 399MB for 100SAR. Then Zain came in, gave you a "premium" number AND the 399MB for 100.
Then Saudi Telecom jumped on and gave 500MB for 100. And then Mobily screwed everyone with the 1GB for 100SAR and 30MB for 10SAR and 100MB for 30SAR.

That's real privatization. That's real competition. If it privatizes the same was as MTC and Alfa. Then yeah, it would be stupid.
I was gonna mention the telecommunication sector in my post but it is a kind of Monopoly here becasue there are only 2 providers and the population is less. Dont forget that the government doesn't provide anything special so that they can expand and have less prices knowing that there will be more users, think about the 3G with MTC and the government what happened to it..?
EDL = state Run Monopoly
Ogero = state Run Monopoly
MTC+Alfa = Duopoly(same Services, Same prices)
Cyberia, IDM, Terranet = Sub - Isps of Monopoly Ogero

no Competition, no 3G, no 24/7 electricity, no Fast/limitless/lagless/affordable internet

the only "private" companies here are shops.

they have to Privatize these stuff if you wanna see any good improvements, but with the Deficits and Debts these companies made.. not alot of outsiders wanna take them.

now to the subject of the topic.

i believe Solar & Wind power can be quite good in Lebanon, considering most of the year is Sunshine and next to the shores & on the Mountains = alot of Wind.

But first we need a solution to acquire "normal country: 24/7 electricity" status :P

seriously whenever i tell some1 i'm from Lebanon, and he/she goes "do you guys have 24/7 electricity" there i feel like im chatting from Afghanistan or something lol
