* New Delhi retaliates against ‘attempts’ by Beijing to steal sensitive government data from defence and foreign ministries
* Import ban has been clamped on all foreign companies, as banning imports from China alone would have violated WTO regulations
NEW DELHI: In retaliation for Chinese attempts to hack secret information in India since last year and to steal sensitive government data from the defence and foreign ministries, India on Saturday imposed a ban on import of telecom equipment from China for an indefinite period.

Most of the cellular phone operators were worried as the foreign companies they were dealing with came under the government’s scanner.
The government-run BSNL was also told this week to cancel one of its biggest orders for telecom equipment from
Huawei Technologies of China. The Indian companies prefer deals with suppliers in China because of the price factor, as they say the Chinese sold equipment at almost half the price that other foreign manufacturers demand.
The Chinese companies, including Huawei Technologies and the ZTE Corporation, were actively involved in construction of India’s telecommunications network since 1999 and had even established their factories in India.

Huawei is one of our major competitors in the world, it is ranked 3rd after Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson
Note that Huawei has offered a complete 3G platform for free as a trial to the ministry of telecommunication in Lebanon.
The company is funded by the Chinese gov. and follows a very aggressive marketing strategy by providing free installation and support for several months post contract; they rely on reverse engineering and cloning of most of their competitors products including Cisco,Ericsson,NSN and Alcatel-lucent.
This is not the first time such a company gets banned, a detective/spying software was also detected on their platform by the UK gov as rumours claimed.
