I just enjoyed watching it. and tried to take a print screen at 1 GB when the Blue Death Screen appeared.
is this IE 8? Because it's known to have memory leak issues with pages that have AJAX that dynamically add/remove DOM objects.
is that strange? ive had ff go over 1.3gb
There is a software called shexview (Shell Extensions Viewer) which lets you disable shell extensions. I have it if you cant find it - it's free. I disabled all extensions here on my PC, just to be on the safe side, except the necessary ones. It takes some time to get it working, explorer will not work if some extensions are disabled, but these extensions are mostly of the same type/class so it's not that complicated.
Anyway it may help.
@NullPointer the process is Windows Explorer.

It's probably a virus which got a hook on it, or it just got hungry. It seems you are not feeding it well. :)

It's Windows Explorer. Not Internet Explorer. I don't even use IE... I have a firefox installer on my usb with me all the time.

Avira ? Do you call that an Antivirus. I guess you should try Kaspersky Pure. You should Give it a try.
P.S: Kaspersky wasn't running when this happened. Check the list of processes.

+1. Firefox sometimes goes crazy.

I use Kaspersky. Plus, i'm a virus detection expert. So, there's no way that this could be caused by a virus.

it used to happen to me but now never.
Weird. My WE sucks about 22mb and a bit more.
Does it happen everytime you login to windows ?

Try restarting the explorer or something. Disable startup programs. OR like rolf said these could be shell-extensions or say explorer addons. like how winrar integrates itself to the window when you right click etc...

Yes man, it is an antivirus, I have been using it for 3 years on many computers. I actually found it was better than Kaspersky because it is free (no need to crack) and does the job.
