Can I actually use GPS and Maps on my Nokia E75 without using external devices/services? I'm completely ignorant on the subject because I tried using GPS and it keeps giving me no satellite signal... so is there a work-around or something?

you need an internet connection .

The internet from MTC costs 10$ per month right?
battikh
why would he need internet? you don't...
unless if he wants to use google maps.

Ok but how do I connect to the satellite? I do not think MTC provides the service, at least not for free...
battikh
GPS has nothing to do with MTC. As long as you have a GPS receiver, you're set to go... no subscriptions required, nothing.

ok now bare with me, one more question... does the E75 have a GPS receiver? It should, otherwise why would there be an application for GPS, right? so how do I get it working? any idea?
battikh
yes, it does have a gps receiver.
last time i used a nokia was...let me think............7 years ago, so i don't know exactly what their gps app does.
but ideally, if you have the app and the maps loaded, you should just have to go outside and run the app and it should work.
the 1st time you run it it sometimes take 3-4 minutes to find enough satellites and sync the clocks.
but remember, you HAVE to be OUTSIDE. if there's no direct line of sight, it wont work, if you don't see the sky, it will most probably not work...

Just for sake of completeness: GPS is a system where on any point on the earth (or most of it I believe) there will always be at least 3 of 12 satellites broadcasting signals. By analyzing the signals, (it could be both time and space encoded), the algorithm is able to approximate position by less than 20 meters radius or less, in addition to velocity.
No sending signal is used. GPS also doesn't require internet.

I have an e72 and e75, they both connect to garmin with leb map installed without connection to internet. Only if you want assisted gps, you could need gprs/edge. Integrated gps is good but slow on nokias not like htc devices. however N series are somehow better than E series when it comes to gps, at least for me...

google maps is good because it can tell your position without gps, using cellular towers

i was referring only to the nokia built in software which "REQUIRES" internet in order to download the maps :-) kareem yours work without internet because you have the maps on your phone ! :) so kassem , if you get the maps it will work for you .

ok so if I connect right now to my wireless LAN and downloaded the maps, I could just go outside my house and use the GPS? please say yes lol :)
Kassem
Ok it worked! but from what I was able to understand is that I need licenses and stuff like that. And there are no maps for Lebanon at all. I was able to download to a map of an area called "Jabal Loubnan" in London! Any suggestions guys?

the nokia does not require to connect to the internet.
you can use map loader, a separate tool downloadable from nokia website and use it to preinstall regional maps on your phone. after this you should be able to use the maps software without internet conenction.
what you should do is for example disable the agps so that it wont bug you asking whether to connect to the internet or not. in addition, you can configure from the maps to work "offline".
i just did that for my trip to dubai and it worked.
the only issue was that it can take several minutes before it tunes into the satellite signals.
