Hey mac users.....

Rumors has been spreading around that Valve is about to unveil Steam for Mac. As in the actual Steam application that runs natively on the Mac without any emulation software or Bootcamp. It is also said that games will also be ported as well with the possibility of starting of with Portal and Team Fortress 2....

That'll certainly be great for all Mac users since Steam catalog is robust with many games...

However, the question is: Will Mac users be able to play against Windows users in online games such as Team Fortress 2? Is it technically possible?
That is good news, but I dont think gamers would want to play hardcore games on a mac or something this will probably just attract casual gamers.

I disagree with you. Opening up a download portal as important as Valve will make it much easier for Mac users to download some serious games.
However, if only Valve is going to support it with games, then yes, it will defintely flop.
4 days later
YUP i read the news, its all over the net, its very exciting, its officially announced to come in April, and iam a heavy gamer, and yes i'll be interested to buy games over steam even for a fortune, cause with the performance of my mac, it will be better than gaming on a pc, Woooot!!!!
I really dont want to see steam on mac.. if steam hits mac, then windows gaming is dead and valve just gets more money. Im hoping this fails big time.

On the contrary, nothing will happen to the Windows gaming. This will just open up the opportunity of gaming to the Mac audience. Granted, not all of the Mac owners will jump on this plus this has the potential to flop if the only developer that'll support it is Valve.

But trust me, it would in no way affect Windows gaming. Even if you mean that less people will use bootcamp, this won't affect at all Windows gamers.

Mac gamers vs Windows gamers in Team Fortress 2? Definitely gonna happen :D

Joke?
Do you know what is keeping the PC platform alive and not totally loosing developer support to just consoles?
Its Valve's Steam! If it werent for them the increasing amount of pc piracy would have totally kept developers and publishers to release their games on the pc platform. With steam around these games have chance to sell (with very good discounts and offers from steam)

I like this idea though :P

i dont feel like replying to you all i can say that your 100000000000000000000% wrong it doesnt matter if its a mac game or pc game the crackers have already cracked all mac games from the first same as windows games plus if your using a pc you have all options from changing every single piece of hardware not to mention its way cheaper than a mac hardware umm what else i can say oh do you remember cod6 when it first released well it was released two days before the official date for steam users to begin downloading it if you know to use torrents it was already uploaded there so steam hehe, its pointless arguing steam protection or not BUT the fact is playing online using steam is the hard one theres work around but its always updated etc

PIRACY will never stop even if its mac or windows making a steam mac version is improving the mac the availability of mac games BUT saying windows will be dead for that reason there's no logic in saying that
-i dont like pc, but pc gaming will never die, nothing will ever die, not pc, not mac, not consoles, cause there is always fanboys hanging in there.
-but the steam thing on mac will never flop, instead i think if its gonna be a succes, and trust me it will be, then many game developers will start porting to mac as well, cause every body want a piece of the cake.
-i agree that pc is loosing (maybe not dangerously) to consoles...
-and many mac people will jump to playing serious games on steam, take me for an example, i have a mac which i use for work, internet, and Leb geeks, and when it comes to gaming i prefer a console than a pc for sure, and now if theres an option to play serious games out of my awesome mac, then trust me i'll go straight ahead. (tht doesnt mean that i'll leave console gaming)
-the way i see it, everybody to day has either a pc or ma, (pc majority ofcourse), but seriously serious gamers today own either an xbox or a ps3, you can't be a serious gamer and stick to pc its silly, you'll never have the same experience, fun, reliability, etc.etc.etc. (tired of typing continue later)

you didnt get my point aj, Im not talking about piracy exactly im talking about pc game releases! Developers do not want to release their games for pc anymore because of piracy. Steam keeps the sales(through discounts) going even though theres still piracy of course.

theres opportunity to ppl who can buy games for cheap prices and discounts. That also encourages developers to publish more of their games on steam (because steam helped them sell).
heres an example: you can look in to retail stores outside for games like Dawn of war 2 which is priced for 40$ alone. Now if you remember the black friday discounts or the holiday discounts which steam made, you were able to buy Dawn of war II, Medieval total war 2, Red faction Guerrilla, Torchlight, Mirrors edge, Audio Surf, Defense grid, Osmos, Braid, Portal, The elder scrolls III and the complete sam and max episodes for a total of 80$!
This really ecourages ppl who usually pirate games to legally buy their games and steam is the platform providing this.

taken from the steam website heres the current deal for this week, its called Eidos/Square enix week
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4002/

$109.96 lowered to -> $37.39 USD
Now let me explain more why im against this mac
We all know that the mac platform is much more stable and reliable than the windows platform no ?
okay so lets say triple a games hit mac (using steam) and everyone is happy with the performance that mac has (that if developers decide to give driver and patch support) what will stop windows gamers from going to mac to game better ? Then windows gaming starts to lose a number of users and developers will focus more on mac gaming platform because its gonna sell. (exclusive games for mac ? possible)

I know mac gaming currently exists and theres a number of triple A titles to be found but they are really really behind the windows platform. If steam gives the opportunity of mac games to be released on the same date as the PC release date (windows) then its trouble for windows gaming and its a new competitor.
heres an example: Bioshock
Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360
NA August 21, 2007
PAL August 24, 2007
PlayStation 3
PAL October 17, 2008
NA October 21, 2008
Mac
NA October 10, 2009
<----------------------

Steam going to mac is not just a phase, its a beginning to a whole new platform that will also hurt the pc (windows) platform, just like the xbox360 and ps3 have been doing so for the past 4 years.
Just that you all know, although steam isnt yet released for mac, but i've had it on my mac working for 3 days now!
-anyone interested???

I woud guess that you're using some kind of emulation software to run it.
Valve has indicated that they're going to release Steam as a native application for the Mac OS X which is more stable than the windows version running under emulation software. I've tried the Codeweavers for Games thing but I found it to be very unstable and on the verge of unusable.
elchebib, yeah i read about valve's release and iam very excited about it, and you're right although it can be done at the moment but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.
and about the "Crossover games" or "winebottler" i've tried to use them, but crossover games only works with original games which is a fail, and winebottler is very good for running programs but not games.
this has always been the case with Macs....... and at some time PS3 even though OpenGL is free somehow.
Kareem - what do you mean "some times PS3 even though OpenGL is free" ?????
