Dear All,
I am not able to watch videos on my BB handset. I called Alfa's 111 and they replied that video streaming is not avaliable for Alfa clients.
Could you please clarify or offer some help?
Thank you!
Regards,
battikh
if you want youtube videos, use vuclip.com or download the bolt browser (
http://boltbrowser.com/download.html), i tried both while in leb on alfa and both do the job.
if you want to use vuclip.com and you use the default bb browser, open the browser --> menu --> options --> general settings and make sure "switching to wap for streaming media" is NOT selected (by default it is).

Thank you for your quick reply. i would like to use vuclip.com.
Tthe 1st step is to go to menu --> options --> general settings and make sure "switching to wap for streaming media" is NOT selected (by default it is).
What is the 2nd step? how do i benefit from vuclip.com?
Thank you again!

BTW Can i download or only watch? Thank you !
battikh
next step is simply to browse to vuclip.com, search for a video and watch it, just as you would do on youtube.
with vuclip you can download the video, when you search for a video, you'll get a link to watch and a 2nd link to download, so you simply chose the download link.

Thanks for the valuable info!
Do the uploaded videos on you tube appear on vuclip.com? or it has its own database?
battikh
they don't have their own databses, the search results come from videos on youtube and some other sites.

Thank you!
I really appreciate your feeback :) My final question is do you have any idea why would Alfa or MTC ban its clients from video streaming through BB?
battikh
you CAN stream, the proof is that you do it on vuclip.com....
what is blocked is direct gprs access, basically access to the internet without the blackberry service. as you might have noticed, blackberry phones are by default configured to use the wap setting for streaming by instead of using BIS. and the blackberry youtube application requires the APN settings. If they would allow you to do that, it would be as if you had the blackberry service AND the gprs service and the gprs service would let you connect your phone to your computer and use the connection on it.
they do the same here in dubai, it's not just in lebanon.
a-telecom
in other words, the video streaming is disabled so you won't be able to connect your BB 2 ur pc ?
battikh
no, because you don't have gprs access (which is because you're simply not paying for it), you can't stream using CERTAIN apps (which try to use it for streaming). They don't block gprs to stop streaming, they block gprs coz that's not part of their service, you're paying just for BIS.
there might also be a codec problems, i don't know which codecs youtube uses on their mobile version and if they are supported on bb phones...
Other apps works fine with streaming. With Bolt for example, you can simply browse to youtube and stream the videos directly from youtube.

ah ok i got it now :D So you said your in UAE... can u please give me an idea about the bb rates? Here, i pay 40$ per month for unlimited MB plan from Alfa.. what about u?
battikh
- Unlimited Local package is around 50$
- Unlimited Global package (you can use it internationally at no extra cost, like if i travel to lebanon, france, ... my blackberry service will keep working): 80$
- Limited Local package (50 MB): 25$
these are the proces for Etisalat, DU's prices (the other service provider) is a bit cheaper.
price wise, lebanon is not falling behind, but in UAE we have 3G (not everywhere though) while in lebanon it's EDGE (bit slower).

battikh,
as i read on google, RIM in canada is resposnible for BB, does this mean they offer the handset and the service itself? more over, could you please clarify why would some people say that I Phone is way better than BB.. does iphone have push email technology?
battikh
RIM is the company that makes the blackberry phones, and yeah, they are responsible of all the bb services. ALFA and MTC give you access to them. ultimately, it goes to RIM.
and the iphone is not better than bb, and the bb is not better than iphone. it all depends on your needs. bb can be better for YOU, just as an iphone can be better for you, it all depends on your personal needs.
for multimedia and gaming, iphone is better. for productivity, bb is better.

is is true that an iphone doesnt support bluetooth? any reason for that ?
battikh
it supports bluetooth headset but not data transfer over bluetooth.
