hello all
trying to have free secure access to all web content i installed Hotspot shield which is supposed to establish a vpn between my PC and their servers in San fransisco where i could have access to all the WWW privately
i have a 265 kb DSL connection from a Lebanese ISP and always have a small monitor for upload and download
the first strange thing i faced upon using this soft is that the download monitor showed a steady peak at 128 KB/S it has never gone above 32 KB/S since i don't have double speed it even reached 512 KB/S for about 10 sec (how can this happen??)
the second strange thing was that the sites took too long to open i wondered if this is a latency issue but i am sure it is not because i tried to download a video from a local server the connection was very slow (then i tried to download a file from the software official site it was the same slow connection)
and speedtest.net took about ten min to open so it didn't work
i deduced that the software is consuming all the connection for VPN establishment which leaves very little bandwidth for browsing and download
maybe i am wrong and i hope i am because i want this software to get the full functionality of youtube since my ********* ISP is banning any streaming sites (don't tell me its my flash player because all streaming works fine on my laptop with other connections)
actually i need youtube for downloading MIT lectures if any one knows any site (other than the ********* rapidsh*re or p2p sites) which post video lectures i will be grateful
thanks
simple , (in plain English) -> you are routing your connection ! now you are sending data to the server with the "name" of the website you want , the server fetches the page then sends it back to you , see ?
i know that
but i dont know how i got 512 KB/S connection
and why the connection is so slow
the connection is not slow , once the remote server fetches your site it should "download" normally . the delay you have is happening between the upload of your request and the download of the site .
Actually i ping the same site :using Hot spot:550 ms
normal 450 ms
so i don't think it is a latency issue
you also have to take into consideration the overhead of the vpn. when you open a vpn, you're adding an extra header to your packets, so you can put less data in your packet as more space is taken by all the headers, therefore you need to send/receive more packets to do the same thing as if you were not on a vpn. but it shouldn't affect your speed THAT much.
other thing that slows down things is that your dns requests are now going through the vpn, so at 550ms, that's much more than if you're using your ISP's DNS.
and finally, their servers might simply be overloaded.
oh, and make sure to have ad block plus to disable all the annoying ads added by hotspot shield.

if you have a hosting plan that supports SSH, just use it to open a tunnel and forward all your web traffic to it.
try your-freedom :D its been a while i haven't used it, but it was great !
thnx battikh and jad for replying
kareem what is your ISP??
Actualy my ISP is going to love this soft 250mb of my account have gone in 20 min
it is not even working browsing is not fully functional
i have the best solution i will call them and tell them that if they dont allow streaming i am gonna have to****** their fancy apartment
Is thier any solutioin for my ISP latency it never goes under 440 ms
Abbabbj wrotei know that
but i dont know how i got 512 KB/S connection

Maybe its burst (although 10 seconds is a bit long for a burst)
Burst is a short increase in speed at the beginning of the download, some ISPs set up their routers to have burst, it accelerates loading of web pages.
Thanks again rolf but it was 128KB till 256KB for half an hour it reached 512KB only for ten seconds where it has never gone above 32KB before execept for the brusts your talking about max 80 KB (for the begining of browsing)
