A month ago my ethernet card blew up. It used to be a good card. It handled power management very nicely and never showed any issues. Since then, I can't find a decent replacement.
I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to hardware and I have an old AMD 2300+.

I'm having a problem with a network card that doesn't support power management. I doesn't resume from hibernate/suspend. I end up having to shutdown which I don't like to. I use Linux and the only time I should really need to restart or shutdown is when there's a kernel update.

lspci | grep Ethernet
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: ADMtek NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11)

Seems the problem is with the 'tulip' device driver or the card itself. I tried another card I had stored but it turns out it is the same crappy card.
I don't want to keep pestering VISP support everyday with "can you please reset my MAC address?" requests. So I need a suggestion for a card and a place where I can a good card.

Basically anything that will use 'tulip' kernel mudule won't like my computer (eventhough it will work on other PCs).

I cant help it, I just have to say this ... install windows :D
What I just said does not imply that I am a windows lover.

have you verified that your motherboard settings are correct and that you have the latest bios firmware?
PLEASE Let's not turn this into a windows/Linux thing. Some of my current hardware doesn't work on anything better than windows 2000 like my tv tuner card and I'm not gonna pay hundreds of dollars for windows + MS office.
I haven't touched a windows installation since early 2004. I don't know how to use it. Linux is extremely easy to use and it's really all I know. I can't get bios firmware update because this is an old 'made in Taiwan' computer.
Power management is a hardware thing and my old computer supports ACPI.

Again, I'm looking for network card models or brands because I know little about hardware. I do know how to replace hard disks, power supplies, network cards, etc.. but that's about it.
You can just change/clone the MAC address yourself by doing the following as root:
ifconfig ethX down hw ether NewMacAddress
ifconfig ethX up

Any cheap/old/non-branded NIC card you get should have good Linux support.
I'm not gonna do any MAC address spoofing.

I know there are non-branded NIC cards. I don't want something crappy and non-branded.

What's a good brand?

I'm not looking for anything with "linux support". If anything works on windows, it'll work exactly the same if not better on Linux.
I just don't know what brands make quality things and what brands make crappy cheap things.

I really wish that was true, but unfortunately it's not.
Ok, but this isn't a linux/windows thing. even before linux loads, the NIC doesn't light up.
All I'm asking is a brand name "something like nvidia or ati with video cards". what manufacturers make NICs?

LB1938 suggested D-link on IRC. I will go look for a D-Link card tomorrow or sometime this week.
I have a bunch of old NICs in a drawer at the office. You can come and take one if you want.

Dear hussam, although I think any NIC type should in theory work with the Newest Kernel. but I could understand your fear since it is not the kernel have to support the NIC type, it is also the Motherboard and its BIOS firmware have both to be able to see and manage your new NIC.

basically the most famous chipsets that I saw works pretty good on Linux are Realtek, Intel, and AMD. Please note I said Chipsets. always concentrate on the chipset type for the NIC.

what I worked with recently and find them good NICs are Intel, Linksys and Eusso. I saw Eusso NICs uses usually Realtek chipsets. you can find Eusso NICs almost in all Lebanon and they have the features you are looking for so does Intel Cards.

they are little expensive than the normal NICs but they worth the Price tag.

and if you have are looking for specific feature, you can simply take the NIC model and Brand Name and search in their website for the list of capabilities that this type of model can provide and if it is compatible under Linux.

so search in the Market For Intel NICs, or Linksys NICs or Eusso NICs those are the three I usually work with and they either uses Intel Chipset or Realtek Chipset or AMD Chipset.

I tried also I-ways NIC and D-Link NICs but they are not that good as the above mentioned especially D-Link has second line NICs which are not good and they come in white and Blue boxes, their first tier line comes in Orange and White Boxes which are better, so keep away from such brand NICs for now.

good luck,
