Just for the sake of illustration: If hes going to pocket half of the budget, and choose the company run by his stepson over the one that is the best qualified for a tender, then I believe it will have an effect on the infrastructure.
and did it happen? and to what extend?
and is THIS what is stopping the improvement of the infrastructure? if he just chooses the companies in charge, improvement would still happen, just with the wrong less qualified people. but the problem with the development of the infrastructure (mainly deploying fiber and bringing more bandwidth to the country) is not this, there IS a show stopper, and it's the ministry of finance.
battikh - get the facts then.
He promiss new fiber optic cable almost before elections, that they will be here after 2 month (after elections) and 20x times faster internet.
There is 2 choices:
1)He KNEW it will not happen. Physically there was nothing ready for that. Cable was not produced even yet that time.
2)He is just not enough smart to understand that and he don't see what happens around.

It was pure technical and planning question which was not depends on Lebanese politics. There was schedule of IMEME alliance and his TV lies was not fitting on it.

Are you trying to tell me that corruption of a high-placed governement official is irrelevant to his performance?
And how would you know about any show stopper, nobody knows what happens in the government reunions.

Dont get me wrong, I do not advocate anything, I am with nobody and against nobody. I have given up hope in these people and am waiting and praying for a miracle. I just wish you would hold a higher level of rhetoric.

Edit: show-stopping from ministry of finance makes the most sense, since telecom revenue is probably pretty high. But who really knows.
rolf wroteAre you trying to tell me that corruption of a high-placed governement official is irrelevant to his performance?
didn't say that at all. said it was not the reason of ALL the problems.
for example, take an extremely corrupt minister. he's supposed to do something but he didn't get an approval from the government (yes, a minister doesn't have a carte blanche, he can't do whatever he wants, even withing his ministry). did this thing didn't happen because he was corrupt? and if it was not his fault on this one if it didn't happen, does it mean that he is NOT corrupt? it's 2 unrelated things in THIS specific case. he can be corrupt and yet, not be the cause of this particular problem.

rolf wroteAnd how would you know about any show stopper, nobody knows what happens in the government reunions.
some people have family members in the government.

and for involvement of other ministries, it's facts. it's not a secret, it's how the structure of our government is. any project a minister wants to make needs his approval, the prime minister's and the finance minister's and if any other ministry is involved (like public works for example, if you want to lay some cables underground), you also need the signatures of these involved ministries. ONE signature missing, and the project is on hold/delayed/canceled.
so if there's a signature missing, you don't even need someone on the inside, the signature is simply missing, it's no secret. and basil did show the papers...
battikh - case with Bassil is easy.
He must not talk on TV "i will do, i will do" BEFORE he do.
And then he blame "oh bastards, they didnt sign papers". Sure. Win for him, he is angel, they are assholes.
But big bad note for him - proper person wont say for people something that he is not sure he will be able to do.

I am almost sure in some cases he KNEW that they won't sign.
^^ technically you can't be sure of ANYTHING, even less in politics...
and usually, in democracies, you try to be more transparent with the people, letting them know what happens as it happens. that's the way things are evolving in the west, what the people ask for.

in my personal opinion, i think they should say what they intend to do and keep us updated about it, and not wait till it's a sure deal. otherwise how am i supposed to know who has good plans, who has good intentions, who is blocking the development of the country, ...? i need to know these things to do a better job next elections. if he keeps quiet about people stopping him from working, i might still vote for them.

if he doesn't say what he will TRY to do, based on what am i supposed to vote for him or support him? based on his looks?
and if he tried but failed due to other ministers blocking him, if he doesn't say he tried, i would blame HIM, while i should be blaming the others.

again, in democracies, before the elections, candidates create an agenda of this they will work on, which is the basis of their campaign, based on what people are supposed to vote for them. it doesn't mean it WILL happen, it just means they will work on it. if you say you want to abolish poverty in the world, it doesn't mean it will work, but you will try.

and do you mean i should blame basil because he knew that his political opponents who historically always have the prime ministry and the finance ministry would block him from doing a good job?

i think you should follow closely once how presidential elections happen in france. it's all about promesses that might happen, or might not, all about agendas, things they will work on, things they will TRY to improve, ...
battikh - i am going to give tomorrow 1000 kg of gold for each lebanese ( just need approval from premier minister)
Also free electricity 100A each and internet 1Gbps even for your pets.

I am good guy and democrate?
Or just bullshit talker and looser?
In this case. I guess i make better promisses than Bassil, i should be minister.
^^ so for you promising a better internet infrastructure is like giving 1000kg of gold to every citizen? what he did he would say was very realistic, and he DID work on it, the ONLY show stopper was other ministers.
in your case, the show stoppers are not JUST the minister's approval, but the fact that you don't have this amount of gold, free electricity would hurt the incomes of the government, ...
what you've just said is quiet irrelevant. what basil said he would work on was very realistic and doable if ONLY other ministers would have approved it.
Politics outside lebgeeks please. There are many political forums you can go and battle about bassil and any other minister, president, or anyone else.

It won't get us anywhere talking about that, specially in here.

Crazy
i'm sorry but the ministry of telecommunication is the core of the subject, you can't discuss the internet situation in lebanon without talking about the ministry. and anyone who claims he could doesn't really know what he's talking about. we're not discussing internal lebanese politics here...
OGERO is the PROBLEM ! we need to give rights to other international carriers to land in lebanon !
@battikh - Talking about the ministery as an entity is not the same thing as attacking the minister in person.
@jadberro - The problem is not ogero, its the people, but that is another story.
nevertheless , OGERO is a part of the problem , shall i say the main part , and that's mainly because of the ignorance of the public ;)
