  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Review [PC]

A direct sequel to the best shooter game of 2007, a direct sequel to the most selling game of 2007, a direct sequel to the legendary game Call of Duty Modern Warfare are three reasons to make Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 the most anticipated game of 2009 !!
It is finally November and the game hit stores, did it fulfill all our high exceptions ? Was it a disappointment ?

The story in Call of Duty Modern Warfare (COD4) was somehow special, it was fiction but real at the same time, describing how could a next or actual war begin. In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (COD6) things are not different. Its plot begins five years after the conclusion of COD4: Despite the efforts of the Marines and the SAS, the Ultranationalists seize control of Russia and declare Zakhaev a hero and martyr. Meanwhile, Vladimir Makarov, one of Zakhaev's former lieutenants, begins a campaign against Europe by committing numerous acts of terrorism. I am not gonna spoil it for you because the story is very interesting; there are lots of twists, heroism, betrayal, ... . Also to understand and get more involved in the story of the game, you have to play a mission called "The Russian" that you can choose not play due to its brutality and savageness (if you have the Russian version you won't play it).
The story has a lot of epic moments and the DEV team made sure to let you live these moments by making them playable. Their gameplay is somehow scripted but it was cool. For example in Brazil you have to run through the roof and catch the helicopter, you will think that it is hard and you have no where to go but the animation let you find the way and creates this feeling that you are in a open world environment and that you are finding the way.
The interesting story that COD6 have needs some good music and who is better that "the Hans Zimmer" for that ? You will find yourself playing with his music in the background while the bullet sound gets lower creating an amazing epic feeling of heroism and patriotism (White House mission)

Call of Duty is known for its intense gameplay, for sure it was not different in COD6; there where some very intense battles (Brazil, White House, Afghanistan) but i did notice a big change is the core of COD general gameplay: first the enemies has better AI (still not that good) and second the unlimited infinite enemy spawns are gone. I am sure that while playing on lower difficulties you won't notice that but go up on hardened and veteran play it a bit, than go back and play COD4 on the same difficulty setting . I am sure that you will notice a big different; COD6 will look much easier cause you can just cover and shoot them all not worrying about the unlimited spawns and kill the enemy with the RPG or with the grenades first and play the battle without having grenade/RPG rain all over your head. What is different this time also is the missions type or style. You won't be attacking with a large number of allies; battles aren't anymore army vs army, you are now part of a special squad that attacks in low numbers and you will find yourself playing some solo moments witch was impossible in previous titles of the game. This new system allowed to DEV team to create lots of mission and gameplay variety: escaping on a snow mobile, infiltration, stealth, .... .
To bad the campaign is too short and the slightly easier gameplay makes it even shorter; it took me about 5 hours to beat the game on hardened difficulty.
In a final word about the campaign mode it was literally an "action movie" converted into a game.

But if you think that the campaign is what COD6 is all about you are definitely wrong !! There are two other modes available for you : Spec Ops and Multilplayer. Unfortunately I was unable to experience the Multilplayer mode (It is a dream for me) so I won't talk about it in this review.
Spec Ops was for me what made COD6 an awesome game. In a short descriptive sentence it is the "ACRADE COD6" . You have 23 mission to beat that I found harder and much more intense and fun that the campaign mode. The missions are playable in solo mode but for real COD experience play this mode in Co-op; after all Infinity Ward did mention that these missions are designed for Co-op play.

In addition to all that, you have a huge weapon catalog and a lot of accessories for them. I wished we had the ability to customize them but we cannot. The good part is that every weapon will feel different while playing so you will favorite some weapons to other depending your style. Graphics also is amazing and because of the so many locations of the game, there is a big scenery variety keeping you from getting bored of seeing the exact same thing.

Verdict
The game was so much fun, campaign mode a bit short but you will live the moment and enjoy it. Thanks to the Spec Ops mode you will be spending more time playing the game and even replay some of its missions. It was sure worth the waiting for.

Very nice. I'm thinking of getting it on PC. What do you think is the minimum internet connection speed needed for smooth online play?
The best connection you need for a smooth online play is the 512 kbps package that comes with most of the ISP. Its preferred if the connection is wired (meaning not Mobi or Wigo or Pesco).

I'm talking here from a console perspective but nevertheless I guess it applies to the PC too.
the difference between the console and the pc is that some processes that may be running on the pc might also have a share in the connection with in the console the connection would be primarily dedicated to game play.

a 512KBs connection is good for online play, i play Fear Combat online on PC but on pirated and non-supported servers it wasn't that much of a good experience : cheats, high ping, .... . On console it was better cause you play on dedicated fast servers and you can feel the difference in speed; Bad Company, Gears of War where awesome online while 2K10 suffered from speed, but when 2K updated their servers it was ok good.
now With online on PC, if you get pirated there is always a difficulty playing online, if you play using hamashi, Xfire, ... or any other pirated service it is not sure that you will find a decent server to play on. Wanna play Online get the original. As for Call of Duty 6 online performance on PC just Google it and look how much people are nagging about lack of real support and dedicated servers .
I played it on PS3 today.
Why 8.5 only for the gameplay? Your review mentions that the campaign is short. However, don't forget you're getting three deals at the price of one: Campaign + Special Ops + Multiplayer.

I think gameplay should be rated at least 9.0.

Nonethless, good review!
I Played it on PC. and it took me 12 hrs, 47 mins, 17 secs to Finish the Campaign Mode - Veteran Level.
Special Ops are far more harder than campaign, I'll be finishing all the Special Ops when i finish my midterms.

As a Summary, The Game is Just Perfect... I'll be waiting Call of Duty 8 - Modern Warfare 3 :P [Since cod 7 will be World at War 2][and as a prediction, it will be about the cold war ;) ] ... i hope Cod 8 will be released by July 2011.

Trenshyard will be doing COD 7 and it was confirmed that its will be during the Vietnam war.
My info till now is that no COD will be released in 2010, COD 7 will be during released in 2011, that may change cause till now nothing official and Trenshyard is keeping everything secret about that game, Wikipedia had posted a Release date for COD 7 in early 2011 , i wonder why .
Any keep your eyes open for Medal of Honor Modern Warfare, today some rumors popped out that its release date will be 29 October 2010 and in March make sure to pick out Bad Company 2 (finally on PC! )

wow you put a full 10 for the graphics !!! I've been having bad comments on my review of COD6 for the high scores I put for that game
check out this comment on my review on N4G:
How on earth do you give a game with noticeably dated graphics, no original gameplay, and no unique ideas a 9.5 out of 10???

mw2 is a 7. 7.5 tops. and i'm bumping it up that high because i do agree with you that it has tremendous sound. and because the developers had the good sense to keep that boring campaign short enough that i wouldn't wanna kill myself by the time i got through it.
Tagged for later, love your reviews GN90
