So if you desperately need to have online chat, i say use an IRC channel like NoReGreT gladly suggested (not even an IRC client embedded on the site).
yep, thou a chatbox would be fun, it would fade after a while, after all the concept of a forum is to have a static long term topics and discusions and not a coffee brake chat.
the other downer with a chatbox is that it does not get archived within the forum so there lifespan and lifecycle of that information and its repurposing by sharing it with others is as long as the chat discussion itself.
for example, should some one ask on the chatbox about how to install linux, this would not be documented for another geek to pick from as a forum thread.
a chatbox can have its place as a chat lobby for ecletic stuff and not for other topic categories as the forum is devided into, programing, interenet etc etc..
