nuclearcat wroteEarlier this month, Time Warner announced it would test metered usage plans in the Triad; Rochester, N.Y.; and the Texas cities of Austin and San Antonio. Under the new system, customers would choose Internet usage plans that cap uploads and downloads at 10, 20, 40, and 60 gigabytes. Customers would pay $1 per GB in overage fees if they went over their caps.
For the Triad and Rochester, the company offered two additional tiers, including a “budget” tier allowing 1 GB of data use per month for $15 and a “super-tier” allowing up to 100 GB of data use for $75. The company also said it would limit overage fees to no more than $75, essentially creating an “unlimited” plan for those willing to pay the fees
Hehe. In some case Ogero do a good deal :-D USA u get 1GB for $15, Ogero u get 2GB for $23 :-D
Nope this project has been canned, they didn't dare... I read it earlier today in google news... but some companies are going to issue warnings for users that consume more than 250 gigs per month, but no of action has been decided
WizaRd
At least their caps start at 10GB :D
The best one we got is 5GB and it is really sad. I can't see why they just cannot give an extra 3-4GB for each account.
nuclearcat
Now start counting. If they are THINKING to make even 250 GB cap and:
1)They have perfect cabling/fiber infrastructure. Underground communications to put NEW cables and fibers. Proper radio towers, where you can rent space for reasonable price. Proper power.
2)Regulation laws that is relatively FRIENDLY for everybody on market. There is no "license for ISP&DPS for $500000". There is frequencies you can use for your wireless links outside without paying "license" and even asking anyone. International backbone is monopoly of Ogero. And they are bankrupt and bureacrat, not able to bring even 1Mbit/s from outside.
3)Backbone cost in USA, for example Cogent $10/Mbit, if you ask them 1G port, they will make maybe even lower, and will plug in your . In Lebanon if you ask 10Mbit, they bring you 5 E1 serials. And cost of 1Mbit will vary $1000-$2000 in Lebanon. One way. So duplex now $2000-$4000.
4)Proper internet exchanges, handling 10-100Gbit/s at peak times. In Lebanon also... not able to handle 2Mbit/s, because of crappy 10Mbit half-duplex ports and wireless links of "licensed DSP" - GDS.
So how much you expect cap to be in Lebanon?

Btw, Please explain for me one thing guys because I keep asking this and nobody answers. They said that Internet in Lebanon will be 20 times faster. That would be in the range of tens of Mbps. But how are we going to use it if our lines do barely support 1mbps. Even my line couldnt handle 1mbps they told me please get the 512kbps
nuclearcat
There is 2 days more to expire this "after 2 month". I can say 100% there is nothing possible to make in 2 days things faster 20 times.
And in reality internet become worse, more unreliable and slower.
Kareem
hehe yeah you are right. But do you have any idea if they are willing to change all the telephone cables in Beirut at least so they would support like 4mbps or more ?
nuclearcat
They are going to wash brain of naive Lebanese, so they elect them.

thumbs up

hahaha people gonna elect them even without wash brain :P believe me hahaha

That is why I keep telling and telling -> DSL is not a reliable technology. It should be used along with wireless
in rural areas, where it is not feasible to run fiber cables. For Beirut (specially the greater Beirut) it is quite simple - fiber. A fiber cable is terminated at an Ethernet switch, located in the basement of a building and then
distributed via UTP to the apartments / offices.
DSL is a CRAP technology not suitable for the business. It gives you maximum 1Mbps upload (on practice - even less), which is insufficient for applications. Even if you have highly developed local peering network, you can't
take advantage of it, because of that 1Mbps upload restriction. What I mean - even if you want to exchange a
file with an office 50 meters away from you, you will be limited at apprx 90KB per second... and WHY?
With fiber you can deliver 10Gbps connectivity to each building (more fiber threads can be placed if needed).
And thus companies can enjoy fast-speed internal VPN links (remote applications, file exchange, video conferences) without using the precious International capacity and without "polluting" the air with wireless
links.
One fiber thread can deliver bandwidth that 200 x AWG 24/26 copper phone lines can deliver under xDSL.
And believe me, one fiber thread occupies 200 times less space under the roads (in the pipe canals) than
200 copper phone lines. I know that it is VERY HARD FOR YOU, MR. BASSIL, TO BELIEVE IN THIS, but
trust me, it is true = 1 cable takes exactly 200 times less space than 200 cables of the same
thickness/diameter.
Run fiber, W AIR. Stop looking at this DSL shit as a panacea. It sux.
I do not know what kind of a telecom expert is Bassil and what was his job in KSA, but according to what
I see, there are two and only two possibilities:
1. He is either dumb as a brick and he/his team has no clue about telecom
2. He knows all this, but he is busy with some more important and profitable things to do.
I leave the answer to him.

I was trying SEVERAL TIMES to explain that first Lebanon has to improve its internal connectivity and then increase its international bandwidth. But my voice can't reach that far =)

go go go go go ogerooooooooooo lol :P
Kareem
hmm impressive ping. my ping sucks take a look...
But maybe I will not feel the difference. Will I ?
Nabz
I want a combination of the Ogero latency and Kareem's download speed with no monthly download quota
Really, compared to other countries...even in the Middle East...it's not asking for much. Why does it have to be such a distant dream in Lebanon? :/
Kareem
let me guess....that 50billions bucks thing ? or maybe because our neighbors ( you know what I mean hein? not Israel :) ) do not want us to stand up?

i think kareem isp metel 3azam 3ndo bandwidth men el global/VISP wmwaza3a ya3ne some time btetdghat fo2 el tabe3a hek bu maktab ekhte 7adet BHV aw2at betkon kter mne7a download kter sare3 aw2at chi mabyetsada2 wba3den kareem ure ping is bad just for games online
Kareem
Yeah but I prefer having good bandwidth rather than downgrading to DSL just for the sake of games. I am not an online gamer anyway. Plus, you are right, now that it is alsmot 9Pm, It is slow, like 3-4mbps on speedtest.net .. at night or before 5PM, I get something around 6mbps..
Raficoo
Ping sure does suck:/
dam i miss my old Unlimited average European Connection($24/month) that i had last summer
this summer i will get this speedy 30mbps for just $34/month:D
