I guess this was to happen, eventually.
After nearly 5-6 months of being a proud WISE customer (WISE BOX) , linked to the fiber line 24/7 and latency 180-220ms all day long ... sh!t happened.
It began Friday evening. Slow speed on browsing and stutters (worse than lag) on GARENA. So i do a trace route only to find out that I have been routed to the stupid flagtel satellite backbone with latency going up to 400-500. More than that, my download speed got down to 1KB/s starting 11:01PM and until 8:01AM (I'll leave you to guess why this specific time). - EVER SINCE FRIDAY!!!
Calling this crap support team is one of the worst things I had to deal with in my life. I think I wasted around 20-30 calls since Saturday and their assistance just goes from bad to worse. "bta3rif l daght 3al chabake..." "are you sure of your signal !?!?!??! maybe there is interference"... and all kinds of excuses.
Whatever you tell them they reply with "we did some tests on your connection and we noticed you have been downloading a lot over night". BINGO.
Anyway the short of the story is... right now I have one of the worst internet in the country. My ping to wise is 20-30 ms as usual, no timeouts, no packet losses... but to try to make them realize the problem is on their end is a pretty hard thing to do. I just dont understand why they "cant switch me back to the fiber line right now" wala 7atta in the upcoming days with NO REASON given.
Padre, Halo.. what is your connection status atm ?
Look how funny this trace route is.. LEBANON --> USA --> UK.

well i think almost everyone was having trouble yesterday with their con. i donno if u guys can confirm
i understand your desperation and anger :(
all ISPs should give their users an anger management course with the con... that would be helpful :P
Good luck finding a good provider
[off topic]
Wise Pain ??? .. that is new :P (6)
Padre
yeah, there seem to be some kind of "international shortage" or whatever u wanna call it, we should ask nuc for the truth behind it :P but we've all been shifted since Wednesday night i guess to the satellite link ...
Now about their "unlimited" download policy ... it's not really unlimited :P it's a "fair usage policy" :P after 4 or 5 g u start to get notice a difference in download speed.
actually if u asked, im sure they would have told you that they are having some problems with the land lines, and not only them, but almost everyone :P
WizaRd
ok there seems to be some improvements but the latency isnt as low as it used to be

what pissed me off is that they never told me they had a failure in the fber link until tuesday evening.. enno come on ya3neh :P by Wednesday you mean last week's Wednesday (19th) ?
there is not an ETA for resolving the issue but I hope its soon.

Something hit the fan at ogero?
I gues nuc is busy squeezing every single bit out of what's left...
Or maybe nuc is actually the cause of all that... maybe he finally hacked the ogero backbone and got his revenge... :D
In any case, be WISE and let it pass ;)
maharadja
I have an IDM dsl connection and it sucks for online gaming. I never get pings under 450ms. I used to have a WISE Box and played online with some lag but it was playable. Now its crap.
Im considering switching my ISP to obtain pings not exceeding 200ms. Ive heard ogero has good pings but I tried FIFA 09 on my PS3 at my friend's Ogero 256 connection and it couldn;t connect properly. It would always disconnect while choosing teams online due to some unappropriate ping.
So what do u think? Who provides the best pings in Lebanon?
WizaRd
What can I tell you... join the club.
VISP had some good pings, OGERO's Blink also have good pings (always 100-120ms on my friend's 512K). But thats the case in Lebanon, things are never stable and/or consistent. What works for someone in one place may not work for somebody else at a different location.
Few more months to go :)
N.B: IDM = fail.
maharadja
Few more months to go for what?
The 256k Blink connection at my friend's place is having pings over 200ms sometimes reaching 350ms !
Do you think if I install the 1 mbps it will have better pings?
WizaRd
Few more months for me to go out of this country.
I dont know if they have different routing for the different DSL options, you'll have to call and ask them.
And the 200ms/350ms pings are to America i guess ? Try to do a ping -t bbc.co.uk and see what you get.
rolf
where you going?
WizaRd
Dubai/Sweden's papers and contacts are ready.
Maybe I'll change my mind and go to France/UK instead. But the first two destinations are most likely to happen.
rolf
Be sure to get a 100 mbps connection in sweden, its probably cheaper then the 512K here.
Dubai is not so great internet-wise, but still a good place to be if you have a good circle of friends there (or make one)

In this case Dubai's not too bad :D
In Sweden I've heard 24Mbit/s is at $60 per month. Latency is 40ms all day but during peak time it goes up to 90-100.
WizaRd
Btw Watermelon, are you on Etisalat or DU ?
battikh
i'm on DU.
will send you a traceroute from etisalat once i go to office...
mir
FlyingWiz.. u choosing the country depending on the internet speed/ cost ?
if it was me, i would go Sweden!
leave the watermelon to rott alone in dubai ... let him stay alone without company
Sweden is wiser on the long term... you found job in dubai now ?
-- Sad to hear that yet another is leaving :(
WizaRd
No but it happens if you choose any country other than Lebanon they would have a better internet in all cases.
Sweden is a personal preference I had since I was a kid, and Dubai is where many of my family's "contacts" reside and work.
Just taking my time now before making a wrong decision
rolf
There is no wrong decisions... just right decisions...
Do what a normal human being would do... Do the wise thing.
Padre
what's with ROFL and the WISE things ? :P:P
WISE is really being shitty !! the subnet they said was closed, is utter bullsh$t. it's still up and running. it has a satellite connection to the state, but with much lower latency then ours and way more stable (less ppl on it :P)
it's full of routers tho, so not sure what is it for. maybe they simply sold it to some company.
In all cases, the max you can get , is talk to some tech guy, that will tell you that ur downloading overnight (well ... overnights off quota are actually made for you to eat in front of your screen, but NO downloading) and that he'll work on it. honsetly they are pissing me off !
